Meaning · English

Remembered, Durga, you take away the fear of every living creature; remembered by those at ease, you give a most auspicious mind. Who but you, remover of poverty, pain and fear, is always so tender-hearted to do good for all?

The gods are speaking to Durga after the buffalo demon has fallen, and they praise her in three steps. Three words carry them. Smrta means remembered, from smr, to call to mind. Bhiti is fear. Svastha means those at ease, literally those standing in themselves. Mati is mind or thought, and subha makes it auspicious. The gods say that when a creature in fear calls her to mind, she takes the fear away, and they say it of every living creature, with none left out. Then they say that when people who are well and untroubled remember her, she gives them a good mind, one that leans toward what is right. So she answers the frightened and the comfortable alike. Then comes a question that needs no answer: who else removes poverty, pain and fear, and is always wet-hearted, ardra-citta, soft the way damp earth is soft, ready to help everyone? Here the gods are saying that her power does not harden her. The same Goddess who has just destroyed an army is, in their telling, tender to all. The praise asks nothing of the listener. It describes her.

A child wakes in the dark, frightened, and calls out, and her mother comes at once. On a bright afternoon the same child, happy and playing, says her name, and the mother gives her gentle, sensible guidance. One mother answers in both cases. Durga, the gods say, does the same for the frightened and for the well.
