Meaning · English

The world finds happiness when these are slain. Let them go on doing their wrong, for long ages bound for hell. Yet you strike them down, Devi, thinking: dying in battle, they will reach heaven. Could you not burn all the enemy demons to ashes by a glance alone? Yet you hurl your weapon at them, so that even foes, made pure by the weapon, may go to the higher worlds. Such is your thought, most gracious one, even toward them.

The gods are puzzling over her method. Two words carry the puzzle. Shastra is the weapon, from the root for cutting or instructing. Pavitra, here in the form shastra-puta, means made clean, purified, the way a thing is cleansed by passing through fire. The gods ask a plain question. She could reduce every demon to ash with a look. Why does she bother with a spear and a battle? Their answer comes in clauses. First, the world is happier once these enemies are gone. Second, if the demons were left alone they would keep doing wrong and head for a long stay in hell. Third, the Goddess strikes them instead, thinking that a death met in battle will carry them to heaven. Fourth, the weapon itself is the cleanser: even her enemies, touched by it, go to the higher worlds. The gods give this as the reason her blow is mercy, and they call her atisadhvi, supremely good, because she holds this thought even toward those who attacked her. The question behind the question is how a mother of the worlds can fight at all. Their reply is that the same act protects the world and rescues the wrongdoer. Nothing here asks the listener to copy the battle. It asks only that the listener see what the gods saw: a severity with no hatred in it.

A potter fires a cracked, muddy pot in the kiln. The heat looks harsh, and a careless eye might call it punishment, yet it is what turns soft clay into something clean and whole. The Goddess's weapon is like that fire: it burns, and the gods say it purifies.
