Meaning · English
The asuras saw the flash of your sword, fierce and blazing, and the gleam crowded on your spear-point. Yet their eyes did not perish, because they looked at your face, lovely as the crescent moon with its cool rays. Your nature, Devi, quiets the conduct of the wicked. This form of yours is beyond thought and matched by no other. Your valor destroys those who took the gods' strength. So your mercy is shown, even toward your foes.
The gods are puzzled, and they say so. Her weapons blaze so brightly that the asuras, the gods' enemies, should have been blinded. Instead they looked at her face, and the gods compare it to the crescent moon, which gives light without burning. The gods praise this as her whole character, which they call sheela, her nature or settled temper. It quiets the conduct of the wicked. The text says her nature does the calming, not only her sword. Then comes avicintya, beyond thought. Her form cannot be worked out by reasoning, and nothing else matches it. Terror and tenderness are not usually found in one person, and the gods give up trying to explain how both are in her. Her vira, her valor, is real. It destroys those who stripped the gods of their power. The gods name the last point as the proof of her dayā, mercy. It reaches even her foes, and the text does not say how. The question underneath is how a warrior can be kind. The gods answer by pointing to what they saw. In their account, the same strength that stops the wrong is what shows her care for the one who did it. They place this at the centre of their thanks.
A surgeon walks in with a scalpel gleaming under the lamp, and her face is calm. The blade is sharp, but she is there to heal the patient. In the gods' praise, the Goddess's weapons are the blade and her face is the calm, and the mercy is the cure.
