What can be compared to you, Goddess, in this power of yours? Where is there another form that frightens enemies and yet is so beautiful? Mercy in the heart and hardness in battle are seen together in you alone, giver of boons, in all three worlds. By destroying the enemy you have saved this whole triple world. Having struck them down at the head of the battle, you have led even those hosts of enemies to heaven. The fear born of the maddened foes of the gods has been driven from us. We bow to you.

Three words carry the verse. Kripa is mercy, a heart that bends toward another's pain. Nishthurata is hardness, the unyielding edge a fighter needs. Varada, giver of boons, is the name the gods use for her: one who grants what is asked. The gods begin with a question they answer themselves: what can be compared to her? Her form frightens the enemy, yet it is also lovely, and they find no second example. Then they say what astonishes them. Mercy and hardness are usually split between two kinds of people, and in her they sit together, seen in all three worlds, meaning heaven, earth and the space between. Next they name what she did. By destroying the enemy in the front of the battle she protected the whole triple world. Even the fallen enemies were led to heaven, which the gods read as mercy working inside the fight. Last, the gods say the fear that the maddened demon's followers had spread is gone from them. The hymn is thanks, and it ends in a bow. It answers the question Suratha and Samadhi carry: can power and kindness belong to one will? The gods say they do in her. Bhaskararaya and Nagoji Bhatta are not needed to see this, since the text states it openly.

A good surgeon holds a knife steady and cuts without flinching, yet every cut is made out of care for the patient on the table. The hardness serves the mercy. In the gods' praise, her fierceness in battle and her kindness are one act, not two.
