Meaning · English

Protect us, Devi, with your spear. Protect us, Ambika, with your sword. Protect us with the ringing of your bell and with the twang of your bowstring. In the east guard us, and in the west, Chandika; guard us in the south. In the north, Ishvari, guard us by the whirling of your own spear.

The gods are speaking to the Goddess after the war with the buffalo demon is won. Having praised her, they now ask for something. The word that carries the request is pahi, protect, from a root meaning to guard or keep. It is said again and again, and each time it is tied to one of her weapons: the spear, the sword, the sound of the bell, the twang of the bowstring. Even sounds are counted as guards. The bell and the bow are heard before anything is seen. Then the request turns to the compass. East, west, south and north are named in turn, so that no side is left open. The names matter too. Ambika means little mother, and Chandika means the fierce one. Ishvari means she who rules. The gods call her by tender, fierce and sovereign names within one breath. The Devi Mahatmya presents all three as the same Goddess. Why ask now? In the hymn so far the gods have seen her mercy and her strength, and their fear has lifted. Having seen both, they do not claim to be safe by their own power. They ask to be kept safe, from every side, by her. What the text puts before the listener is this plain trust: a protector who is fierce toward harm and a mother to those she guards.

At dusk a mother walks round the house, trying the front door, then the back, then each window, and stops at each one before she sits down. The gods' prayer is that walk: protection asked for side by side, so no direction is left unwatched.
