Meaning · English
The gentle forms of yours that move through the three worlds, and the forms that are terrible beyond measure: with all of these, protect us, and protect the earth. The sword, the spear, the mace and the other weapons, Mother, that rest in your hands like tender young shoots: with these, protect us from every side.
The gods are speaking to the Goddess, and they name two kinds of her. Saumya means gentle, mild, like moonlight. Ghora means fearsome, the kind of terrible that makes the ground shake. The gods say both kinds of her forms are out roaming the three worlds, and they ask for both. They do not pick the soft one and leave the hard one out. Then they turn to her hands. Karapallava means a hand like a pallava, a young leaf or new shoot. It is a tender word. Yet the weapons sit in those hands: sword, spear, mace, and the others. The picture is of softness and iron held together, with no strain between them. They call her Ambika, little mother, as they ask. Why do they say this now? They have just watched her end the buffalo demon. Their fear was real, and so was the rescue. They have seen that her mercy and her weapons are one nature, not two. So they ask her to guard them, and the earth with them, from all sides, using everything she has. The hymn teaches that the Mother who comforts is the same one who fights for her children. It asks nothing of the listener except to see her whole.
A mother stands at the kerb with her child's small hand in hers. The hand is soft and warm. When a lorry swings round the corner, that same hand closes hard on the wrist and pulls. Tenderness and grip belong to one hand. Gentle forms and fearsome weapons belong to one Goddess.
