Meaning · English
So the gods praised her. They worshipped her, the Mother who upholds the worlds, with heavenly flowers from the garden of Nandana, and with perfumes and fragrant pastes. All of them, with devotion, perfumed her with divine incense. Her face turned gracious and calm, and she spoke to the gods, who all stood bowed before her.
Medhas tells Suratha and the merchant what the gods did once their hymn was finished. Praise was not all they offered. They brought flowers from Nandana, the garden of heaven, along with scented pastes and incense. The gods give their finest things. Three words carry the passage. Dhatri, the name given to the Goddess, comes from dha, to hold or support. She is the one who holds the worlds up, and the text calls her that at the very moment the gods kneel to her. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Medhas says the gods offered everything with bhakti, so the gifts are an act of love rather than a payment. Prasada here means clearness and grace, like water settling until it is calm. Her face is prasada-sumukhi, turned toward them gracious and clear. The last clause is the turn. She has been worshipped, and now she speaks to the gods, who are still bowed. Medhas is answering the question behind the whole story, which is how the Mother meets those who come to her. In his telling she receives them with a settled, kind face and answers them. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows what the gods did and how she looked back at them.
A mother comes home to children who have laid the table, picked flowers and waited quietly by the door. Before she says a word, her face softens, and then she speaks to them. The gods' offerings are the table. Her calm face is the grace that answers them before any request is made.
