Choose, all you gods, whatever you wish from me. Well honoured by these hymns, I give it, and I give it gladly. Whatever else is still to be done, whatever is hard to do, that we do not know. Hearing the Goddess's words, the dwellers in heaven answered.

Three words carry this. Vriyatam means 'let it be chosen', from vri, to choose. The Goddess does not hand out a fixed gift. She lets the gods pick. Stava means a hymn of praise, from stu, to praise. Priti is delight, a warm and willing pleasure. Dushkara means hard to do: du, difficult, and kara, doing. The Devi Mahatmya shows the Goddess speaking first. She tells the gods to ask for whatever they want from her. She says she gives out of great delight, and she names the reason: the hymns of chapter 4 have honoured her well. Her giving answers their praise. The next lines turn to the gods. They say that nothing else remains to be done, and nothing hard is left undone, that they know of. The buffalo demon is dead and their kingdom is back. The narrator then closes the scene: the gods hear her words and reply. This is taught here because the hymns have been long and the war is over. The question left open is what praise is for, and what the praised one gives back. The text answers that the Mother is moved by thanks and offers more than the gods have yet asked for. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see this: she meets gratitude with open hands.

A host watches guests clear the table and sing a thank-you, then says, 'Take anything in the house you like.' The guests glance around and find nothing missing. The host is the Goddess, the open offer is her invitation to choose, and the guests' puzzled contentment is the gods saying nothing remains undone.
