Meaning · English

By the Blessed Goddess everything has been done. Nothing at all remains. Our enemy Mahishasura has been struck down. And if a boon is still to be given to us by you, great Goddess, then let it be this: whenever you are remembered, again and again, may you put an end to our worst calamities.

The gods are answering a question the Goddess asked them in 4.30: choose what you wish. Their reply has two halves, and each rests on a word. Bhagavati means the Blessed one, the one who holds fortune and lordly power. The gods open with that name because they credit the whole victory to her. They say everything has been done and nothing is left over. They had nothing to add to the work, and they say so. Then comes the boon. Vara means a choice, from vr, to choose. She has invited them to choose, so they do. They ask for no kingdom and no weapon. They ask that she answer when remembered. Smrta, remembered, comes from smr, to recall. The word is doubled, so the remembering is meant to happen many times. Paramapad is the last key word: param, the highest or worst, and apad, a misfortune that falls on you. What she is asked to destroy, from hims, to strike down, is the heaviest kind of trouble. The reason for the request is plain. Mahishasura is dead, but the gods have just learned how fast they can be overthrown. Their wish is for a standing refuge, and the Devi Mahatmya shows them asking for it. They ask for nothing for themselves beyond the memory of her.

A family's flooded house has just been dried out and mended. The plumber says it is all sorted. They thank him, then ask him to leave his number on the wall, in case the pipes ever fail again. The gods do the same with the Goddess: thanks for the finished work, and a way to reach her later.
