Meaning · English

Whoever praises you, spotless-faced Goddess, with these hymns: for the growth of that person's means, abundance and riches, of wealth, spouse and all that belongs to a household, may you be gracious to us always, Ambika.

The gods have just finished their hymn, and now they ask a second favour, this time for other people. Four words carry it. Prasanna means gracious, and its root sense is settled and clear, like water after the mud has sunk. They ask her to be that way toward the one who praises her. Vibhava means abundance, from the root bhu, to become: a thing that has come into being and spread. Sampad means fulfilment, riches in the sense of things going well. Ambika means little mother, the name they use when they ask. The clauses run in order. Anyone who sings these praises. Let that person's means, abundance and goods grow, including money, spouse and the rest of a household. And let her be kindly to us, always, not only today. The gods ask for ordinary things: money and a family. The text does not treat them as small. Medhas is telling this to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant whose family cast him out, so a settled home matters to both of them. Having asked first that she rescue them from great dangers, the gods now ask that her kindness reach the human beings who speak her praise.

A guest thanks the host warmly at the end of a meal, and the host says, come again, the door is always open. The praise is the thanks, the standing welcome is the Goddess's graciousness, and the full table and household are what the visitor leaves with.
