The story · English

Suta spoke to the sages. In the land of Bharata, at the hermitage of Badari, two beings who were incarnations of Hari lived in austerity. Their names were Nara and Narayana. They were sons of Dharma, and they were devoted to Shiva. Every day they made a lingam of earth and worshipped Shambhu in it. They asked him to come to that lingam to receive their worship, and because Shiva yields to his devotees, he came, day after day. Nara and Narayana kept this worship for a very long time. Years passed, and they did not tire of it. Then one day the Lord was pleased with them, and he spoke. "I am content with you. Ask me for a boon."

Nara and Narayana answered him, and they did not ask for themselves. They spoke out of a wish for the good of all the worlds. "Lord of the gods, if you are pleased, and if a boon is ours to ask, then stay here in your own form. Stay so that people may worship Shankara himself." Suta said that Shankara, hearing this, agreed. In Kedara, in the high country of the snows, Maheshvara took his place there as a light. Nara and Narayana worshipped him, and he was known from then on as Kedareshvara. He took away every sorrow and fear. He stayed so that devotees could see him and be helped.

Suta said that Kedareshvara gives devotees what they long for, and that a person receives it by seeing him or by worshipping him. The gods worship him there. So do the ancient sages. Those who live at Badari worship Shiva every day, and from this well-pleased Maheshvara they receive what their hearts desire. From that day on, a person who worships Kedareshvara with devotion will hardly meet sorrow, even in a dream. Then Suta told of the Pandavas. Shiva had taken the shape of a buffalo. When he saw the Pandavas, he used his power of illusion and ran. They caught him, and he stood fixed with his face turned downward. They held his tail, and they begged him again and again.

Shiva stayed in that buffalo form, and he is called the one who loves his devotees. His head went off and was set in Nayapala, where it remains in that form. Yet he is worshipped at Kedara, and there he gave his command to the Pandavas and gave them boons. Shambhu himself stayed there, worshipped by them. The Pandavas worshipped him and went away glad. They had received all they wished for, and they were free of every sorrow. At the place called Kedara, Hara is present in person. The people of Bharata worship him there to this day. A bracelet given at that place is said to take on the form of Hara, and to be close to it.

Suta said that anyone who sees that form is freed from all sins. Anyone who has gone to the forest of Badari and seen the forms of Nara and Narayana, and of Kedareshvara Shambhu, is liberated while still alive. There is no doubt of it. Devotees of Kedareshvara who die on the road, while travelling toward him, are freed as well. A person who goes there with love, worships Kedareshvara, and drinks the water of that place is not born again. In this land of Bharata, Suta told the sages, all living beings should worship Kedareshvara, lord of Nara and Narayana, with true devotion. He is master of this land, and he grants every desire. Hearing this account destroys all sin.
