Suta said: now I will tell the greatness of Bhimashankara. Whoever merely hears it receives what he wishes. In the country called Kamarupa, Shankara came down in his own person, for the good of the world. Listen, and I will tell you why. Long ago there was a powerful rakshasa named Bhima. He brought suffering to every creature and always worked to destroy dharma. He was born of Kumbhakarna and a rakshasi, Karkati, and he lived with his mother on the Sahya mountain. When Rama killed Kumbhakarna, Karkati stayed on in the Sahya hills with her son. One day, while still a boy, Bhima asked her: "Mother, who is my father? Where is he? Why do you live here alone? Tell me the truth."

Karkati answered: "Your father was Kumbhakarna, the younger brother of Ravana. Rama killed him, along with his brother. He came here once and took me by force. Then he went back to Lanka and left me here. I never saw that Lanka. I have lived here ever since. My father was Karkata and my mother was Pushkasi. My husband was Viradha, and Rama killed him long ago. After that I stayed beside my parents, but the sage Sutikshna, a pupil of Agastya, burned them to ashes in his anger when they went to eat him. So I was left alone on this mountain, with no support and no shelter. Then Kumbhakarna came, took me, and left. After that you were born. Now I pass my days leaning on you."

Bhima listened, and his anger rose. He thought: "Hari killed my father. He killed my mother's father. He killed Viradha. He has done us great harm. If I am truly Kumbhakarna's son, I will make Hari suffer." Having decided this, he went off to practice great austerities. He aimed them at Brahma and kept them up for a thousand years. He fixed his mind in meditation, stood with arms raised and on one foot, and held his gaze on the sun. A terrible fire of heat came out of his head and scorched the gods. They went to Brahma for shelter, bowed to him, praised him, and told him their trouble: "This rakshasa's heat is about to crush the worlds. Give him the boon he asks, or we will all burn and perish."

Brahma, grandfather of the worlds, heard them and went to the rakshasa. He said: "I am pleased. Ask for what is in your mind." Bhima said: "If you are pleased, lord of the gods, give me unmatched strength." Brahma gave the boon and went home. Bhima went back to his mother, bowed to her, and said proudly: "Look at my strength now, mother. I will bring a great destruction on the gods, Indra at their head, and on Hari who helps them." He first defeated Indra and the gods and drove each of them from his own place. Then he defeated Hari in battle. Then, gladly, he set out to conquer the earth. He went to Sudakshina, the lord of Kamarupa, and a terrible fight began. By Brahma's boon Bhima beat that great warrior, a man who took refuge in Shiva.

Bhima beat him, bound him, and struck him. He took all the king's goods and his kingdom. This king, the servant of Shiva, was devoted to dharma and dear to Hara. Bhima shut him away in chains, in a lonely place. There the king made a fine earthen image of Shiva and began to worship it. He praised the Ganga in many ways. He bathed in his mind, then worshipped Shankara in the manner of earthen images. He meditated, bowed, spoke hymns, took the proper postures, and served Shankara with joy. He repeated the five-syllable mantra with the syllable Om. He had time for nothing else. His wife, the good queen Dakshina, also made an earthen image with love. The two of them, with one mind, worshipped Shankara every day, who looks after his devotees.

Meanwhile Bhima, drunk on his boon, wrecked all sacrifices and rites, saying, "Give it to me." With a great army of evil rakshasas he brought the whole earth under his rule. He destroyed the dharma of the Veda, of the shastras, of the Smriti and the Purana, and enjoyed everything himself. The gods, with Indra, and the sages were tormented and driven out of their worlds. In their misery they put Brahma and Vishnu in front and went to Shankara for shelter. On the shore of the Mahakoshi they made an earthen image, worshipped it properly, and praised him with many hymns. Shambhu, pleased, said: "Hari, Brahma, gods and sages, I am pleased. Ask. What shall I do for you?" They bowed with joined hands: "Lord, you know all, and nothing is hidden from you. Still, hear our sorrow. The rakshasa Bhima, son of Karkati and Kumbhakarna, strong with Brahma's boon, torments the gods without rest. Kill him. Do not delay."

Shambhu, kind to his devotees, said he would kill him. Then he told the gods: "The king of Kamarupa is my best devotee. Go and tell him this: Sudakshina, great king, you are especially my devotee. Keep worshipping me. I will kill the evil rakshasa Bhima, strong with Brahma's boon, who has insulted you. There is no doubt." The gods went gladly and gave the king Shiva's words, then went away in great joy, and the sages returned to their hermitages. Shiva too went, with his attendants, and stayed hidden near his devotee to guard him. Then someone told Bhima: "The king is doing some rite against you." Furious, Bhima took a sword and went to kill him. He saw the earthen image and the king in meditation, and said: "You wicked king, what are you doing? Tell me the truth, or I will kill you."

The king, full of trust in Shiva, thought: "What will happen will happen. Shiva is kind and is surely present in this image." Then, in his mind, he prayed: "I am yours, lord. Do as you wish." Out loud he said: "I worship Shankara, protector of his devotees, the changeless lord of all." Bhima shook with rage. "What will Shankara do to me? Let him show himself." The king answered steadily: "I cannot do what you ask." Bhima threw his sword at the image. Before it touched, Hara himself appeared from it and said: "I am Bhimeshvara. I appeared to protect." With his Pinaka bow he cut the sword in two. Bhima's trident he broke in a hundred pieces, his spear in a hundred thousand, and his club to sesame-seed bits. The earth shook and the seas heaved. Narada begged Shiva to end it. With one roar, Shiva burned Bhima and every rakshasa to ashes. The gods were at peace. Shiva's anger-flame went from forest to forest, and from the ashes herbs grew. At the sages' prayer, Shiva stayed there as Bhimashankara, and that linga destroys every calamity.
