Vishnu, Shiva and I have all been made to take on bodies by you. So who is able to praise you? You, Goddess, are already praised in this way by your own noble powers. Now bewilder these two hard-to-overcome asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha. Let Achyuta, the lord of the world, be woken quickly. And let the understanding be given to him to slay these two great asuras.
Brahma speaks, in Medhas's retelling, and the first thing he admits is where he stands. Vishnu, Shiva and he himself have taken bodies, and the Goddess is the one who made them do it. The word for this is karita, caused to act. The three great gods are not her equals standing beside her. They are part of what she sets moving. That is why praise fails him. If she is the source of the one praising, any words he finds are already hers. So he says she is praised by her own powers (svair prabhavaih), meaning her works are her praise. His speech can only point at them. Then the hymn turns to a request with two parts. The first is mohaya, from muh, to be dulled or lose the thread. He asks her to bewilder Madhu and Kaitabha, who are durādharṣa, hard to overcome. He does not ask her to strike them. He asks her to cloud their minds. The second is prabodha, from budh, to wake. Vishnu, here called Achyuta, the one who does not fall, lies asleep, and Brahma asks that he be woken quickly. Bodha is also the word for the understanding Brahma asks her to give him, so that he knows to slay the two. The reason for the order is plain. Brahma has no power of his own to stop them, and the one who could is asleep by her doing. So he goes to the one who holds the sleep. The text teaches that waking and bewildering both lie with her, and that the right way to ask is to admit how little one can do alone.
A dimmer switch on a wall. People in the room can see only as much as the hand on the dial allows. They cannot out-argue the dial, but they can ask whoever holds it to turn it up. The gods stand in that room, and the Goddess is the hand on the dial.
