Meaning · English
Praised in this way by Brahma, the Goddess of dark sleep, Tamasi, came forth to wake Vishnu and so to bring about the death of Madhu and Kaitabha. She left his eyes, his mouth, his nostrils, his arms, his heart and his chest, and stood in the sight of Brahma, whose birth is unseen. Released by her, Janardana, the Lord of the world, rose up from the bed of the serpent on the single ocean. Then he saw the two of them.
Three words carry this. Tamasi means the Goddess in her aspect of darkness and sleep; it comes from tamas, the dim, heavy quality that covers awareness like a cloth. Vyakta means made visible, so avyakta-janma, the epithet for Brahma, means one whose birth is unseen: he sprang from a lotus, with no visible parent. Jagannatha means lord of the world, and the text uses it for Vishnu at the very moment he is asleep, which is the point. Now the clauses. Brahma has finished his hymn, and Medhas tells the king that the Goddess, as Tamasi, answers it. Her purpose is stated plainly: to wake Vishnu so that Madhu and Kaitabha can be slain. She does not strike anyone. She withdraws. She leaves by the eyes, mouth, nostrils, arms, heart and chest, the places through which a person sees, breathes, acts and feels, as if sleep had been spread through his whole body and now drew out of it. She then stands before Brahma. Released, Vishnu rises from the serpent bed and sees the two asuras. Why it is told here: the king and the merchant asked why the mind clings even to what hurt it. Medhas answers that Mahamaya binds even the Lord of the world, and that only she can loosen the hold. Vishnu does not wake by his own will. The text teaches that the same power that binds is the one that frees, and that releasing is hers to give. It asks the listener to notice who is holding whom.
A man sleeps so deeply that shouting does not reach him, yet when his mother lays a hand on his shoulder he opens his eyes. The sleep and the waking were both in her keeping. The Goddess is that hand: the sleep that held Vishnu and the touch that lifted it are one power.
