Five Thousand Years of Fighting

Devi Mahatmya 1.71

Meaning · English

The two wicked ones, Madhu and Kaitabha, of great strength and daring, eyes red with anger, had grown zealous to devour Brahma. Then the lord Hari stood up and fought them. Armed with nothing but his own arms, the all-pervading one fought for five thousand years.

Three words carry this. Durātmā means a bad-souled one, a being whose own nature has gone crooked. Madhu and Kaitabha are called this. Vibhu means the all-pervading, the one who is everywhere and so has no need of anything. Hari is a name of Vishnu, the one who takes away. Now the clauses. The two asuras are strong and bold, their eyes red with rage, and their zeal has been roused to devour Brahma, who sits on the lotus. Medhas then says Vishnu rose, now awake because the Goddess has released him, and fought them. He used no weapon, only his arms. The fight lasted five thousand years. Medhas tells this to the king and the merchant because they asked why even the wise are bound by delusion. The story gives his answer by example: Vishnu, the preserver of the world, lay asleep until the Goddess let him go, and even once awake he could not end the matter quickly. The long fight shows how stubborn the two asuras are. It also prepares what follows, where it is not his strength that finishes them. The listener is asked only to hold the picture: the danger is real, the struggle is long, and the one fighting is not yet the one who wins.

Picture a man who wakes at dawn to find a flood at his door and starts bailing with his bare hands. He works hour after hour and the water barely drops. The man is Vishnu, the bailing is his five thousand years of fighting, and the flood is an enemy that arms alone do not end.
