Meaning · English
The two of them, drunk with their own great strength and bewildered by Mahamaya, said to Keshava: "Ask a boon from us." He answered: "If you are pleased with me, let both of you be killed by me today. What other boon do I need here? This alone is what I choose."
Two key words open this. Mahamaya is the great Maya: maya, from ma, to measure or fashion, is the power that makes things appear as they seem; maha means great. Vimohita means bewildered, from the root muh, to be confused or deluded. The text says the two asuras are vimohita by Mahamaya, the same Goddess whom Brahma has just praised. Their pride, their strength, and their offer all come from that bewilderment. Medhas tells it in order. First the asuras, intoxicated by strength after fighting, turn to Vishnu, here called Keshava, and offer a boon. They think they are the givers and he the one in need. Then Vishnu answers. He asks for one thing: that they be killed by him. He adds that no other boon is wanted. Medhas teaches this to Suratha and Samadhi, who cannot let go of what hurt them, to show how Mahamaya works. A being can stand at the edge of its own end and still feel generous and powerful. The commentators on the Saptashati read the whole episode as an account of this binding power. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see how the asuras are blind to what they are offering.
A man who has been winning at cards all night leans back and offers to stake his whole house on one more hand, sure of his luck. He cannot see the table has already been turned against him. The asuras' offer is that stake, made in confidence.
