Meaning · English

Tricked, and seeing the whole world turned to water, the two spoke to the lotus-eyed Lord: "Kill us where the earth is not flooded. We are pleased with your fighting. You are worth praising as our death."

Three words first. Vancita means tricked, cheated of what one expected. Salila is water, and here it is everything: the cosmic ocean where Vishnu has been fighting. Shlaghya means worth praising, someone of whom one speaks well. Medhas tells what happens next in the story. The two asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha, had offered Vishnu a boon, and he had asked for their deaths. Now they see they were tricked. They had offered freely, and he took the one thing they would not have chosen. They look around and find the world has become water. So they speak to the lotus-eyed Lord with a single condition: kill us where the earth is not under water. Then they add that his fighting pleases them, and that he is worth praising as their death. Even cornered, they bargain. Even while bargaining, they boast and flatter. The text brings this scene in answer to the king's and the merchant's question about why the mind clings and goes on scheming after it has been wronged. Medhas has already called these two bewildered by Mahamaya. Their haggling over the ground they will die on is that bewilderment shown at work. Their strength is intact and their cleverness is quick, but they cannot see where they stand. The scene asks the listener only to watch how that binding looks from outside.

A swimmer far out in a lake, clearly beaten by the current, calls to the one who has caught him that the finish should be moved to the shore. He still wants a say over the ending. In the same way, the asuras name the place of their own defeat.
