Meaning · English

Then Chandika, the auspicious one, saw the two great asuras, Chanda and Munda, brought before her. She spoke gracious words to Kali: "Because you have come to me carrying both Chanda and Munda, therefore, Devi, you will be known in the world as Chamunda."

Three words carry the verse. Kalyani means the auspicious one, the giver of good. The text calls Chandika this at the moment she speaks, so the praise comes from a gentle mouth. Lalita means soft and pleasing, and it describes her voice. Chamunda is the new name. It is built from the two names Chanda and Munda alone. The word for 'taking' or 'seizing' gives the reason for the name; it adds no part to the name itself. The name is the deed, said as one word. The clauses run in order. Chandika sees the two great asuras, now brought to her. She speaks to Kali, and she speaks warmly. She says that because Kali came carrying Chanda and Munda, Kali will be known in the world by a name made from theirs. Nothing is added to Kali's power. The deed is simply given a name that people can say. Why it is taught here: Kali had just offered the two heads and said that Chandika would herself deal with Shumbha and Nishumbha. Chandika's answer is a gift. The text teaches that what the Goddess's power does in the world is remembered by a name, and the name is how the world comes to know and call her. Medhas tells this to a king and a merchant who have lost much, and the name is one more way the Mother can be called upon. The text asks nothing of the listener here. It only gives them the name and the reason for it.

A bridge in a town is called after the person who built it, and every traveller who crosses says that name without thinking. In the same way, Kali's deed is folded into one word, Chamunda, and the world keeps the act inside the name it calls her by.
