Meaning · English
Chanda was killed, and Munda was struck down. Many of the armies had been wiped out. Then Shumbha, the mighty lord of the asuras, his mind ruled by anger, gave the order to raise every army of the daityas. He said: "Today let the eighty-six daitya chiefs with weapons lifted march out with all their forces. Let the eighty-four chiefs of the Kambu clan march out as well, each surrounded by his own troops."
Three words carry this passage. Daitya is a name for the asura clans, the sons of Diti, who fight the gods. Asureshvara means lord of the asuras, which is Shumbha's title. Udyoga means effort, a gathering of strength, here the calling up of an entire war machine. The passage runs in order. First the losses are listed: Chanda dead, Munda felled, and many soldiers gone. Then comes the state of the king. The text says his mind was paradhina to anger, meaning it belonged to the anger and was no longer its own master. Then comes the order. He does not stop to weigh what has happened. He calls out everything he has. The eighty-six armed chiefs and the eighty-four Kambu chiefs are to march with all their own troops behind them. Medhas tells this to King Suratha, who has himself lost a kingdom. He knows what it is to be wounded and still cling. The telling shows how anger answers loss. Shumbha is called mighty and powerful, yet when two of his best fall, the only thing he can think to do is send more. The story does not praise this. It shows a strong mind that has handed its steering to rage, and it lets the listener see that plainly. The text does not ask the listener to do anything with this. It simply sets the scene for what the Goddess meets next.
A man loses a stake at a fair stall and, furious, empties his whole purse onto the next throw. The purse is Shumbha's armies, and the throw is his order to march. Anger does not weigh the loss. It stakes everything again.
