Meaning · English

Fifty clans of the asuras, the Kotivirya, and a hundred clans of the Dhaumras: let them go forth at my command. The Kalakas, the Daurhrdas, the Mauryas and the Kalakeyas, the asuras: let them march out ready for war, swiftly, at my command. Having given this order, Shumbha, lord of the asuras, whose rule was dreadful, set out himself, surrounded by many thousands of great armies.

Three words carry the passage. Ajna is a command, an order that is simply to be obeyed; Shumbha uses it twice, and nothing in his speech asks, argues or explains. Kula is a clan or family line. He calls up whole households of fighters by name, not single soldiers. Bhairava means fearful, and shasana means rule or governance. So he is called one whose rule is dreadful: men obey him out of fear. The clauses go in order. First he names the Kotivirya clans and the Dhaumra clans and tells them to leave their homes. Then he names four more peoples, the Kalakas, Daurhrdas, Mauryas and Kalakeyas, and tells them to be ready and to hurry. Finally, once the orders are given, he does not stay behind. He sets out himself, with many thousands of great armies around him. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who has lost his own kingdom. Suratha knows what armies are and what a ruler's word can do. By the sage's telling, this is the full weight of what stands against the Goddess: a master who commands, clans who must answer, and a march so large it fills the road. The teaching sets the scale first, so that what follows is understood against it. The passage asks nothing of the listener directly. It asks only that the size of the force be seen plainly, with no hurry to the ending.

A foreman at a loading yard shouts the names of crews one after another, and engines start down the whole line until the yard is moving. Shumbha's roll call works the same way: a single voice names clan after clan, and one man's word sets a whole country's strength rolling.
