Meaning · English
Seeing that terrible army coming on, Chandika filled the space between earth and sky with the twang of her bowstring. And the lion, O king, let out a mighty roar. The Mother added to that roar with the ringing of her bell. Kali opened her mouth wide and, with fearful cries, overcame the din of bowstring, lion and bell, which had filled every quarter. Hearing that sound, the demon armies on all four sides surrounded the Goddess, the lion and Kali, each full of anger.
Key words first. Chandika is a name of the Goddess meaning the fierce one, from the root chand, to be wrathful. Nada means sound, a call or roar. Dig-mukha means the faces of the directions, the quarters of the sky. Kali is the dark one, who here opens her mouth wide. Now the clauses. Medhas tells King Suratha that Chandika sees the huge, frightening army approaching. She answers with sound before any blow: her bowstring, drawn and loosed, fills everything between ground and sky. Her lion adds a great roar. The Goddess takes up that roar and makes it larger with her bell. Then Kali, mouth stretched open, cries out so fiercely that she overcomes all three sounds, and every direction is full of noise. The demon host hears it and closes in from the four sides, angry, around the Goddess, the lion and Kali. Why is it told this way? Medhas is telling two broken men, a king without a kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family, how the Goddess meets what is overwhelming. The text shows her meeting a vast army first with presence, not with fear. Each sound is picked up and made greater by the next, as if the Goddess, her lion and Kali were one voice. The anger of the demons answers it. The sound draws them in. What it asks of the listener is only attention: to see that in Medhas's telling the Goddess is not shaken by numbers. The commentators read her several forms working together as one power, not as separate fighters.
Picture a village drum circle at a festival. One drummer starts, a second joins louder, a bell rings over both, and then one voice rises above all of them until the whole square is full of sound. Medhas's telling works the same way: bowstring, lion, bell and Kali each build on the last, one power growing through its parts.
