Meaning · English
At that moment, O king, to destroy the enemies of the gods and for the good of the lion-like chiefs of the immortals, the powers of Brahma, Shiva, Guha, Vishnu and Indra came forth, filled with great valour and strength. They left the bodies of the gods and went to Chandika in the very forms of those gods. Whatever form a god had, whatever ornaments and whatever mount, in exactly that shape his own power came to fight the asuras.
Three words carry the passage. Shakti comes from the root shak, to be able. It means the power by which a being does anything at all. Rupa is form, the shape by which something is recognised. Vahana is a mount, literally that which carries, so the animal or vehicle a god rides. Medhas tells King Suratha what happened while Chandika, the Goddess, faced Shumbha's armies. The powers of five gods leave their bodies. Brahma, Shiva, Guha (Kartikeya) and Vishnu are named, and Indra with them. Each power comes out whole and strong, and goes to Chandika. This happens for two stated purposes: to destroy the enemies of the gods, and for the good of the gods themselves, whom the verses call lions among the immortals. The last verse tells how they arrive. Each power takes the form of its god, with his ornaments and his mount. Nothing is mixed or generic. Everyone watching can tell whose power has come. The teaching answers a question the story raises. The gods are great, yet they needed rescue. Medhas answers that what makes a god able to act is his shakti, and that shakti is no mere accessory. It stands apart from him, takes a shape and joins the Goddess in battle. Power belongs to the Mother's side of the field. The passage asks nothing of the listener. It lets Suratha see where strength comes from and in what form it appears.
A signet ring pressed into warm wax leaves a print with the same pattern, the same edges and the same crest. The print is a separate thing, yet it can only be the ring's. So each goddess is the likeness of her god's power, the same in shape and no one else's.
