Meaning · English
In front, on a chariot yoked to swans, came Brahma's own power, holding a string of prayer beads and a water pot. She is called Brahmani. Maheshwari came riding a bull, carrying a trident and a boon-giving hand. Great serpents coiled as bracelets on her arms, and a crescent moon adorned her. Kaumari came with a spear in her hand, her fine mount a peacock. She was Ambika herself, in the form of Guha, and she came to fight the daityas.
Medhas is telling King Suratha who stepped out of the gods' bodies to stand beside the Goddess. This verse names the first three. Two words carry it. Shakti means power, from shak, to be able. Each Matrika is the working power of one god, not a separate being. Matrika means little mother, from matri, mother. These are mothers who arrive to defend. Now the clauses. Brahmani is Brahma's power. She rides a vehicle drawn by swans and carries prayer beads and a water pot, the tools of a seeker who recites and purifies. Maheshwari is the power of Shiva, lord of all. She sits on a bull, holds a trident and a hand that grants boons. Her bracelets are great snakes, and a crescent moon is her ornament. Kaumari is the power of Kumara, also called Guha. She carries a spear and rides a peacock. The last line says she is Ambika in the form of Guha. Medhas does not treat the three as rivals of the Goddess. They are her, shown in the shape of each god. Why is this taught here? Suratha has lost his kingdom and wants to understand the power that rules the world. Medhas answers by showing that the strength of Brahma, Shiva and Kumara is not theirs alone. It belongs to the Mother and returns to her. Each arrives dressed exactly as the god is dressed, as verse 8.11 says. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows who has come to the field.
Think of one river mapped on a page, then three separate streams named for three towns it passes through. Each town carries its own name and its own boats, yet the water is the same. Brahmani, Maheshwari and Kaumari are those streams, each wearing a god's name and gear, while the water is the Goddess.
