In the same way Vishnu's power came, seated on Garuda, with conch, discus, mace, bow and sword in her hands. The power of Hari who took the matchless form of the boar came there too, bearing a boar's body. The Narasimhi came, bearing a body like that of the Man-Lion, and by the tossing of her mane she scattered the clusters of stars. Indra's power came likewise, thunderbolt in hand, seated on the king of elephants, with a thousand eyes. As Shakra, Indra, is, so is she.

Three key words open this. Shakti means power, from shak, to be able. Each god has a shakti, and she arrives as a figure of her own. Vaishnavi is the power of Vishnu, and the word is simply 'of Vishnu'. Sahasranayana means thousand-eyed, a name of Indra. Medhas goes on telling Suratha how the Mothers gather. First comes Vaishnavi on Garuda, the great bird, carrying Vishnu's five weapons. Then Varahi, who wears the boar body that Hari once took. Then Narasimhi, who wears the Man-Lion's form, and her shaken mane flings the stars about. Last is Aindri, with Indra's thunderbolt, on his great elephant, with his thousand eyes. The closing line says she is just as Indra is. The point of the pattern is plain. Each Mother has the same form, mount and weapon as the god she comes from. Medhas has already said that each god's power left his body and went to Chandika. So the strength in the gods was never only theirs. It stands here as a being who can act on her own, beside the Goddess. Why teach it? Suratha has lost his kingdom and asks how the Goddess works. Medhas answers by showing that the gods' might is gathered into her, and she is not one more among them. The listener is asked to see where power comes from, and to hold that picture before the fighting begins. The Mothers are often read as the Goddess's own forms, drawn out of the gods to serve her.

Think of a lamp lit from a single flame. Many small lamps stand in a row, each shaped like the one it was lit from, each burning with the same fire. The Mothers are those lamps, each carrying a god's own form and strength, all kindled from the one flame that is the Goddess.
