Meaning · English

Then, surrounded by those divine powers, Ishana, the lord Shiva, said to Chandika: "Let the asuras be slain quickly, for love of me." Then from the Goddess's own body came forth Chandika's Shakti, fearsome and exceedingly fierce, howling like a hundred jackals. The unconquered one spoke to Ishana, whose hair was matted and grey as smoke: "Go, Lord, as my messenger to Shumbha and Nishumbha."

Three Sanskrit words open this passage. Shakti means power, the force by which a god acts. Ishana is a name of Shiva, the Lord, the one who rules. Duta means messenger, one sent with words and not with weapons. Aparajita, the title given to the Goddess, means unconquered: a-para-jita, one who cannot be beaten by another. Now the clauses. Shiva, ringed by the powers of the gods who have come to fight, asks Chandika to have the asuras killed quickly, and he asks it out of affection for her. So the request comes from love, not from hatred of the enemy. Then a new Shakti leaps from the Goddess's own body. She is terrifying and wild, and she cries out like a hundred jackals. The text calls her Chandika's own power, so she is not a separate being brought in from outside. Medhas then tells how the unconquered Goddess turns to Shiva, grey-haired and matted, and sends him: go as my envoy to Shumbha and Nishumbha. Why is it told this way? Suratha and Samadhi are listening, both of them stripped of what they held. Medhas shows them a power that stands above even the great gods. Shiva asks her to act, and she in turn gives Shiva his task. The greatest god takes an errand from her. The commentators on the Saptashati read the Goddess as the supreme power from whom the gods' powers come. The story here asks nothing of the listener except to see who commands whom.

A queen in her council hall sends her most senior minister, grey-haired and respected, to carry her terms to the rival camp. The minister could command armies himself, yet he walks out holding her message. So Shiva, greatest of the gods, goes out carrying the Goddess's word.
