Carried, not choosing

Bhagavad Gita 8.19

Meaning · English

This same multitude of beings, taking birth again and again, dissolves when night arrives, helpless, Arjun. And when day arrives, they spring into being once more.

Three words carry it. Bhutva bhutva means 'having become, having become': the same beings come into existence over and over, not just once. Pralina, from which the dissolving comes, means a melting into, an absorbing, not a smashing. Avasha means 'without will': having no control of one's own. Put together, Krishna tells Arjuna that the whole multitude of creatures is absorbed when Brahma's night arrives and is brought forth again when his day dawns, and in neither movement do they choose. Why say it? In the two verses before, he described the great day and night of Brahma. Here he turns from that vast clock to the creatures who ride it, and says they are carried, not steering. For Arjuna, standing before a battle, this shows how a life of separate forms looks from far off: arising and dissolving belong to every being, not to him alone. Shankara reads the helplessness as the pull of past action and desire. Ramanuja reads it as dependence on the Lord, who sends beings out and draws them back. Madhva also stresses that the creature depends on the Lord, who alone is independent.

A tired passenger on a long night bus feels the head nod and cannot stop it. Sleep takes him at some stretch of road, and he wakes at a stop he never chose. Beings go under and come up the same way: the turning of night and day does it, and no one's wish.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, watch for the moment sleep takes you. Notice that you cannot find the exact point where you chose it. 2. Tomorrow, on waking, notice that you did not decide to wake. Spend one minute on this before picking up your phone. 3. Once during the day, name three things that arrived without your asking, such as hunger, a mood, a memory. Notice that each also passed without your sending it away.

A retired teacher wakes at five on his first Monday with no school to go to. The body has kept its old clock, and the alarm he did not set rings anyway. He lies there, annoyed, as if he had failed at something. Krishna's words give him a different footing. Waking was never his act; day arrived and he came up with it, as beings do in the text's picture. So he need not argue with the hour. He can get up, make tea, and let the morning be what it is, without reading his own helplessness as a fault. Ordinary experience bears out the small part of this: no one has ever managed to will themselves into sleep at the exact minute they chose. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that he will feel no loss for his old work, and it does not replace a doctor if the waking hours are a sign of illness or low mood that will not lift.
