Higher than the hidden

Bhagavad Gita 8.20

Meaning · English

Higher than that unmanifest is another unmanifest creation, eternal. When all beings cease to exist, that one is never annihilated.

Krishna has just described a cycle: beings come out of the unmanifest at the start of Brahma's day and dissolve back into it at night. Now he says there is something beyond even that. Three words carry the verse. Avyakta means unmanifest, literally 'not made visible'. Bhava means a creation, a state of being. Sanatana means always there, with no beginning that fades. So Krishna names a second unmanifest, higher than the first, which is not part of the cycle at all. The first unmanifest is where created things rest between their appearances. This one is untouched by their appearing and ending. The last clause makes the point: when every being ceases to exist, this one is never annihilated. Krishna says this because Arjuna is facing a battle in which many will die, and the sorrow comes from thinking that dissolving is the final fact. Krishna answers that the dissolving happens inside something that does not dissolve. Shankara reads the higher reality as the supreme Brahman, beyond the seed-state of the world. Ramanuja reads it as the supreme Person, distinct from unmanifest matter and from individual souls. Madhva reads it as Vishnu, the Supreme, higher than the primal nature. All three agree that it is beyond the cycle and does not end with it.

Pictures flicker on a cinema screen and go dark when the reel ends. The dark between films is not the end of the screen. The bare screen was there before the first picture and is there after the last. Beings appearing and dissolving are the pictures. The higher existence is the screen they pass across.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes by a window or at a table with nothing in your hands. 2. Name three things that ended this week: a meal, a meeting, a mood, a day. 3. Notice that you were present for each ending and are still here now. Do not argue with it or push it further; just notice. 4. Write one line on a scrap of paper about what felt different, even if the answer is nothing, then put it away.

A woman stands in the courtyard of her grandmother's house the morning before it is pulled down. The roof is already off. She has the key in her hand and no use for it. Every room she learned as a child is about to become rubble, and she feels that everything is going with it. The verse would change that moment in steps. First, it lets her name what is ending without pretending it is small: the house, the sounds in it, the people who filled it. Second, it says that Krishna places all such endings inside the cycle of appearing and dissolving, and that he points beyond the cycle to something that does not end when beings do. Third, it gives her a place to turn her attention besides the wreckage. She can still grieve the house and also hold that teaching beside her loss. Ordinary experience already shows that a person can stand in a ruined place and still be the same one who stood in it when it was whole. The verse does not take the grief away, bring the house back, or make the demolition easier to watch. It does not replace the people around her, or a doctor if the grief becomes too heavy to carry.
