The story · English

Hanuman, the vanara chieftain, bowed before Vibhishana, the new-made king, took his leave, and hurried through Lanka to Sita's garden. He found her beneath a tree, with rakshasa guards all around her. Her cheeks were pale, her hair was tangled, and her clothes showed how deep her despair had gone. He came closer and greeted her gently as she wept. She started up. She knew that voice, and joy lit her eyes. 'My queen,' he said, 'the enemy is dead and Lanka is won. Rama sends you this: "For your sake I met my deadly enemy and killed him. I have not slept. I bridged the sea to keep my oath. Weep no more, my love. All is well. Good Vibhishana rules here now, so think of this palace as your own." And his love will bring him here soon.'

Sita's face flushed and her eyes overflowed. For a while she could not speak. 'The joy came so fast I could not find words,' she said at last, faintly. 'Even in my happiest days I never heard news like this. This message is worth more to me than gold and jewels.' Hanuman raised his hands to her in reverence. 'Those words are worth more than pearls, my queen, more than the throne of heaven. But grant me one thing before I go. Let me kill these guards, this rakshasa band, who have threatened and insulted you for so long.' Sita answered him, 'No, do not be angry with servants. When a king commands, they must obey. Blame my own past deeds, for as we sow, we reap. These women frightened me only because the tyrant told them to.'

Hanuman listened with admiration. 'You speak like the true wife of Raghu's son,' he said. 'Tell me what you want, for I am going to him now.' Sita smiled. 'My first wish, my only wish, is to see my husband.' 'Before this sun sets,' said Hanuman, 'Rama's eyes will look into yours. You will see his faithful brother, and every friend who fought for you.' Then he went to Rama. 'Now meet the queen for whose sake all this began,' he said. 'She lies weeping, and she will go on longing until your eyes turn to hers.' But Rama stood lost in thought, and tears gathered in his eyes. He looked at the ground, sighed, and said to Vibhishana, 'Let Sita bathe and dress her hair, and bring her to me in scented clothes and gold.'

Vibhishana went to his palace, and Sita was brought from her bower, dressed in splendid robes and jewels. Tall, strong rakshasa bearers carried her out through the gate of Lanka, hidden behind a silk screen. The vanaras pressed close on every side, eager to see her, and Vibhishana's guards pushed them back, while the murmur of the crowd rose like the roar of the sea. Rama saw it and grew angry. 'Why strike and threaten the vanaras?' he said to the king. 'Stop this. I count these people as my own. A woman is not guarded by walls and towers, or by a king's splendour. Her own conduct is her guard. At holy rites, in war and in grief, at a bride's choosing and in a wedding procession, a woman may show her face.'

'My queen has suffered long in prison,' Rama went on. 'She can stop hiding her face for now. Am I not standing beside her? Put the litter down. Let Sita walk to meet me, and let the forest people see her face.' Lakshmana and the vanara chiefs who heard this were filled with grief. Sita's gentle heart sank. She shrank from every eye and came slowly before her husband, her eyelids lowered in shame. Joy fought with surprise as she lifted her eyes to his. Then she struggled with her doubt and fear, and drove them out. Heedless of the crowd, bright as a moon without a cloud, she looked at him with joy and trusting love.

He saw her trembling beside him, looked at her face, and spoke. 'Lady, my task is finished. You are won, the prize of this war. This arm has won back my honour. The enemy who insulted me is dead, and the stain on my name is wiped away. The bridge across the sea, the city red with the blood of giants, Sugriva's armies, Vibhishana's loyal guidance, all of it has borne fruit today. But understand this. It was not love for you that brought my army across the sea. It was not for you that blood was shed. I fought for my honour, and for the law that was broken. My love is gone, because there is a stain on your name. You are as painful to me as light to a wounded eye.'

'The world is open to you. Go wherever you like, but not with me. How could my home take back a wife with such a stain? Ravana carried you through the sky. He fixed his evil eye on you, put his arms around your waist, held you to him, and kept you in his women's quarters.' Each word struck Sita like an arrow to the heart. She shrank into herself, and tears poured from her eyes. At last she dried them and answered through her sobs. 'You are a prince. How can you speak to a woman of good birth like this, like the lowest of men? I swear by my whole life, I am not what you say. If some women are faithless, does that make all of us so? Look at what my own life has shown you.'

'If he seized me and I felt the grip I dreaded, blame fate and the thief, not me. What could a helpless woman do? My heart was my own, and it stayed true. Why did you not reject me when Hanuman came to Lanka? I would have died then, and you and your friends would have been spared this war. Have you forgotten everything? My birth from the earth as Janaka's child, the day I laid my trembling hand in yours, my love through joy and sorrow?' She turned to Lakshmana. 'Son of Sumitra, build me a pyre. I will not live under this shame. The fire will be my surest friend.' Lakshmana looked at Rama and found no mercy in his face. No one dared to speak. The wood was piled.

Sita walked slowly around her husband, bowed to the Gods, and raised her hands to the Lord of Flame. 'As my heart has never strayed from Raghu's son,' she prayed, 'protect me, Fire, witness of all things.' Then, fearless to the end, she stepped into the flames. A cry went up from everyone, women, children and men, as she disappeared into the fire in her jewels and fine clothes. The cry pierced Rama's ears, and his eyes filled with tears. Then the Gods came through the sky on shining chariots: the ancestors, the lord of riches, Yama, thousand-eyed Indra, the lord of the sea, the God of the bull banner, and Brahma. 'You created the worlds,' they said to Rama. 'How could you let your queen give herself to the fire? Do you still not know who you are?'

'I think of myself as a man,' Rama said, 'the son of Dasharatha, king of Kosala.' Brahma answered, 'You are Narayana, the Lord Vishnu, and Sita is Lakshmi, your wife. You took this form to free the worlds from Ravana.' Then the flames rolled back, and the Lord of Fire rose from the pyre holding Sita, alive and unharmed, her crimson robes and fresh garland untouched. 'Your queen returns to you without a stain,' he said. 'In word, deed, look or thought, she never turned from you.' Rama wept with joy. 'I never doubted her,' he said. 'But she lived long in Ravana's power, and the world had to see the proof, or slanderous tongues would never be silent. Now her truth is shown, and I will never leave her.' He held her close, and she hid her face against his chest.
