The war was over, and Maheshvara turned to Rama and spoke to him warmly. "Strong-armed hero, you have fought a wondrous fight, and you have always held to what is right. The terror that hung over earth and heaven is gone because of you, and every world rejoices and praises your name. Now go and bring peace to Bharata's heart. Let Kaushalya stop weeping. Let Queen Kaikeyi see your face, and let Sumitra look on you with love. Take up the kingdom of your fathers, and let sons born to Sita carry on Ikshvaku's old line. Perform the horse sacrifice, give your wealth away in gifts, and in time rise to heaven. But look now. Your father, King Dasharatha, has come down from where the Immortals live. Bow to him. He loves you dearly."
Rama and Lakshmana bowed to their father. Dasharatha stood high in the chariot, wrapped in light that shone far around him, his clothes so bright that no dust could settle on them. When his eyes fell on the son he loved, he pulled Rama to his chest and spoke gently. "Heaven gives me no joy, because you are not there. Even among the saints and sages, I think of your sorrows. I have never forgotten Kaikeyi's scheming, or the cruel words that sent you away to wander the forest. Now I hold you both, and my heart is full. Now I understand what the Gods intended: that the might of Purushottam lived in you, to destroy the tyrant of the worlds. How happy Kaushalya will be to hear your voice again. Go, lord of Ayodhya. Begin your reign."
Rama answered, "Father, grant me one kindness. In your anger you once said, 'Kaikeyi, you are no longer mine. I cast off you and your son.' Take back that curse. Let no sorrow fall on her or on Bharata." "She will live free of that guilt, since you ask it," said Dasharatha. Then he put his arms around Lakshmana. "Great merit and great glory will be yours. Serve your brother and honour him. Gods, saints and sages, with Indra at their head, bow to Rama. He is the heart of the Gods, the One who never ends." Last, he smiled at Sita. "Dear child, keep no trace of anger or hurt. When your truth was tested in the fire, it was love for you that moved him. The flames bore witness to your faith. You will live in every heart as the best of women." Then he said goodbye to the three of them and flew home to heaven, rejoicing.
Then Indra, who once struck down Paka, turned to Rama. "This is a glorious day. We are pleased with you and we love you. Tell us what you wish for." Rama said, "If I have earned your favour, grant me one thing. Bring back the vanaras who died for me. Call my friends back from Yama's hall. And when they rise, let there be fruit of every season and streams of clean water to welcome them." Indra replied, "That is a great gift, and only you should receive it. But I keep my word. Their wounds will close, and they will rise like sleepers waking." And the vanara armies stood up again and filled the plain, gathered around Rama, and bowed in wonder. The Gods praised him and said, "Hurry home to Ayodhya. Comfort your wife. See Bharata, who lives as a hermit out of love for you. Dry Kaushalya's tears." Then they rode their shining chariots back to the stars.
That night Rama slept peacefully. When morning came, Vibhishana greeted him. "Fine oils and perfumes are waiting for you, with rich clothes and jewels. The water jars are freshly filled, and skilled women are ready to help you bathe." Rama said, "Let others want these perfumes and fine clothes. I don't care for such things. Far away, faithful Bharata is waiting for me, keeping his hard vow and worrying. I want to stand beside him. I want to see my own country. But Ayodhya is so far, and the road is long and difficult." "One day," said Vibhishana. "One day will carry you all that way. I have the wonderful chariot called Pushpaka, made by divine hands. Ravana took it long ago when he defeated the God of Gold. It will carry you through the air, and you will land in Ayodhya without any weariness."
"But," Vibhishana went on, "if anything I have done has pleased you, and if you still care for your friend, stay a little while in Lanka. Rest from the fighting in my halls as my honoured guest." Rama answered him kindly. "You risked your life for me. Your advice was worth more than I can say, and you have been honoured for all of it. It is hard for me to refuse you anything, best of your people. But I long to see my home and everyone dear to me, and I cannot bear even an hour's delay. Forgive me, and send me on my way." So the magic chariot was brought out, the one Vishvakarma had built in ancient times. It flashed and blazed like the sun, and the sons of Raghu stared at it in wonder.
Vibhishana looked at the chariot and said humbly, "The car is ready, King. Tell me what else you want." Rama said, "These armies who came to Lanka's shore have shown their faith and courage, and they put you on the throne. Repay their long, desperate days with pearls and gems and gold, so they all leave proud of their reward." Vibhishana did so at once. Then Rama climbed into the chariot, which shone like the sun, holding Sita on his lap as she lowered her eyes. Lakshmana stood beside him, bow still in hand. Rama called out, "King Vibhishana, and you vanara chiefs, hear my farewell. The work we began in doubt and fear is done, thanks to you. Sugriva, go back to Kishkindha and rule there. Vibhishana, Lanka is yours, and you have nothing to fear. I leave this island now."
They all called back at once, "Son of Raghu, we want to come with you. We want to walk in Ayodhya's groves, watch the sacred oil anointed on your head when you are crowned, pay our respects to Kaushalya, and only then go home." Rama's heart filled with joy. "Sugriva, my faithful friend, Vibhishana, and all you chiefs, come aboard. Nothing could make me happier than to return to my own land with you all around me." Sugriva leapt to Rama's side with his vanara lords, and Vibhishana followed close behind with his own chiefs. At Rama's wish the chariot rose from the ground, decked with swans and silver wings, and carried its load of kings up through the clouds. Rama looked down eagerly. "Look, Sita. There is Lanka on the crest of Mount Trikuta. Those fields are still red where the armies met. There Ravana fell, and there Mandodari knelt and wept for him."
"There is the shore where we lay down exhausted," Rama said. "Look, love, at the sea, Varuna's home, roaring and full of pearls and shells. The morning sun is shining on Hiranyanabha, the mountain that rose out of the ocean so Hanuman could rest. And there is the bridge, stretching from shore to shore. People will honour it until the end of time, and it will grow holier and cleanse them of their wrongs. Now look over there, at green Kishkindha, where Sugriva rules and where I killed Vali. There is Rishyamuka hill, shining with gold, where I first met Sugriva and promised him my help. There is Pampa, bright with lilies, where I walked in grief and mourned you like a madman. That is where Kabandha died. And in Janasthana, that tree, where Ravana killed our brave friend Jatayu, who gave his life fighting for you."
"That glade among the trees is where we lived as hermits," Rama went on. "See our little hut of leaves, where Ravana stole you, the love of my life. Below us is the Godavari, clear and lined with lilies. There the sage Agastya lived, and there is Sharabhanga's simple home, which Indra himself visited. There live the hermits under Atri, who loved us, where you met his holy wife and talked with her. Now look at the wooded slopes of Chitrakuta, and the Yamuna flashing through the trees. Bharadvaja keeps his vows there in the shade. There is the Ganga, the river of heaven, and the towers of Shringavera, where my old friend Guha rules." Then his voice changed. "I see them, I see your bright spires, Ayodhya, city of my fathers. Bow your head, my love. Greet our home, the home we lost so long ago."
