On the way home, Rama had the flying chariot stop. It came down at the hermitage of the sage Bharadvaja, and Rama went in and bowed to him. "Holy one," he said, "I need to know how things stand in Ayodhya. Tell me the people are well. Tell me the queens are still living." The old sage's eyes lit up, and he smiled gently. "Your brother still lives by your wishes," he said. "He is as faithful to you as ever. He wears his hair matted like a hermit, and your safe return is the only thing he thinks about. He bows before your shoes, and he looks after your house and your kingdom in your name." Rama listened, and some of the weight he had carried for fourteen years began to lift.

Bharadvaja went on. "When your exile began, I saw you pass this way with Sita, dressed in bark like a hermit. My heart ached for you. You had lost everything that belongs to a prince, and still you held to your duty and your father's word. Now I see you victorious, with friends all around you. I have watched everything you did: the Brahmins you saved, the enemies you struck down. Let me give you a gift. Stay the night as my guest, and leave at dawn." Rama bowed his head. Then he asked for one more thing, for his companions. "Let the road to Ayodhya be lined with trees heavy with fruit and flowers of every season, for the vanaras." The sage agreed, and it happened at once. For league after league the vanaras walked beneath that shade, eating happily as they went.

Earlier, when Rama had first looked down and seen Ayodhya far off, he had called Hanuman, the one he trusted most. "Go ahead of us to Ayodhya," he said, "and find out if all is well in the palace. On the way, stop at Shringavera and tell Guha, lord of the Nishadas, that I am coming home victorious, with my queen restored to me. He will show you the road on. Greet my brother with my love and tell him everything. Then watch Bharata's face closely, every change in it, every gesture. Who does not hold on to a crown once he has worn it? If, after all these years, Bharata has come to want the throne, let him keep it. Let him rule. Learn what is in his heart, and come back before we arrive."

Hanuman took on the shape of a man and rose into the air, fast as a storm, through the realm of the wind, his father. Far below he saw where the Ganga and the Yamuna meet. He came down at Shringavera, and Guha was glad to hear Rama's message. Then he flew on, past the Valukini, past the Gomati and its forests, over golden fields and pastures full of cattle. At last he reached Nandigrama, a place of bright flowers and shady trees, where women sat watching their children and grandchildren play. There, in front of a small hut, sat Bharata. He wore a hermit's clothes, his hair was matted, and he was pale, thin, and worn out with waiting. He still kept his hard vows, still honoured Rama's shoes, and still kept the land safe from harm.

Hanuman raised his joined hands and spoke. "Prince, I bring you a loving greeting, and Rama himself sent it. You have been grieving for him as if he were still in the Dandaka forest with matted hair and a hermit's clothes. Let that grief go. Today you will see your brother. He has defeated his enemy, his long vow is finished, and he is coming home with Sita, with Lakshmana, and with his friends." The joy was too much for Bharata. His senses swam, his strength left him, and he fell fainting to the ground. When he came to, he jumped up and threw his arms around Hanuman, crying onto his neck. "Are you a god or a man, to come to me in such kindness? I will give you a hundred thousand cows, a hundred villages, and twenty good and lovely women to marry."

Bharata paused, overcome, and then spoke again. "For years I have lived in doubt and fear, and now this news comes at last. The old saying is true: great joy comes to a person only once in a hundred years. Tell me everything that happened to him, what he lost and what he won." So Hanuman told him, starting from the day Rama entered the dark Dandaka forest. He told how Viradha fell, and how at Sharabhanga's hermitage Rama saw Indra come down from the sky. He told of Surpanakhi, burning with desire, who was sent away with her nose and ears cut off. He told how Rama destroyed the demon army, and how Khara, Trishiras and Dushana died. Then he came to the golden deer.

He told how Rama was lured away chasing that deer and shot it, and how while he was gone Ravana came and carried Sita off. He told how the old vulture Jatayu fought to save her and gave his life. He told how Rama kept searching, followed the thief to his stronghold, built a bridge across the sea, and won his queen back, never to lose her again. Bharata heard it all with his whole being stirred. Then he sent word to Shatrughna. "Fill every shrine with flowers, burn incense, play music. Go out to meet your king. Let the drums sound and the singers and bards who know the old songs raise his praise. Call the royal mothers, call every noble from the council, the Brahmins, the army, everyone we love and honour, to bring our lord home in triumph."

Shatrughna was full of joy and set to work. "Send ten thousand men," he ordered, "and have them level the road for the king of Kosala. Have thousands sprinkle it with cool water and strew it with flowers. Hang banners on every tower and temple and gate, and cover every roof with blossoms and garlands." The nobles hurried out on elephants with gilded, jewelled harness, a thousand chiefs on horseback, a thousand in shining chariots, and crowds beyond counting on foot. The widowed queens rode in curtained litters, Kaushalya first as head of the household, then Sumitra, then the others. Then, surrounded by Brahmins in white, with conch shells and drums and cheering, came Bharata, carrying Rama's shoes on his head. A white canopy and golden fans were ready to be held over Rama.

But they came near Nandigrama, and there was still no sign of Rama. Bharata turned to Hanuman, troubled. "Have you played a sweet trick on me, the way your kind sometimes do? Where is Rama? I look, and I don't see a single vanaras." Hanuman answered him. "Look at those trees, heavy with fruit and humming with bees. The sage made them bloom out of season for Rama's sake. Listen, you can hear the vanaras shouting. They must be crossing the Gomati now. I can see the chariot that Brahma designed, bright as the moon, that once belonged to Ravana and was won when he died. There are the sons of Raghu, with Sita standing between them. There is Vibhishana, and Sugriva with his people." Then the whole crowd, young and old, cried out together: it is Rama.

Everyone got down from elephants, horses and chariots, and every eye turned to Rama's face. Bharata stood still a moment, then raised his joined hands and welcomed him. He climbed into the chariot and bowed at Rama's feet, until Rama lifted him up and held him close. Bharata greeted Lakshmana and Sita, then Sugriva, king of the vanaras, then Jambavan and Vali's son and every chief. He embraced Sugriva. "We were four brothers," he said, "and now you are the fifth. A friend is known by kindness." To Vibhishana he said, "You fought well for Rama." Shatrughna honoured his brothers and touched Sita's feet. Rama went to his mother Kaushalya, saw how pale and thin she was, comforted her, and held her feet. He bowed to Sumitra, to Kaikeyi, and to the family priest.
