Before them went Kali. With her spear she tore the enemies open, and with her skull-topped staff she crushed them as she moved across the field. Brahmani sprinkled water from her water-pot. Wherever she charged, it took the strength and fire out of the foes. Maheshvari struck with the trident, and Vaishnavi with the discus. Kaumari, blazing with anger, slew the daityas with her spear. Aindri brought down her thunderbolt, and by hundreds the daityas and danavas fell torn open on the ground, streaming floods of blood.

Medhas names the Mothers one at a time. Each has her own weapon and her own way of fighting. Three words help. Kali means the dark one, and she goes in front. Kamandalu is the water-pot an ascetic carries. Brahmani uses it, so her weapon is water that drains strength rather than a blade. Shakti means power, and it is also the name of the spear Kaumari carries. Now the clauses. Kali tears the enemy with a spear-thrust and crushes them with her staff. Brahmani sprinkles water, and the demons lose their vigor and become easy to defeat. Maheshvari takes the trident and Vaishnavi the discus. Kaumari, in a fury, kills with her spear. Aindri's thunderbolt fells the daityas and danavas by hundreds. The telling is short and does not linger on the blood. The names point to the gods whose powers these Mothers are: Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu, Kumara and Indra. Each carries what her god carries. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and to Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his family. Both are asking how anything can stand against forces too big for them. The text answers that the Goddess's power is not one blunt thing. It reaches the enemy through many hands, and each hand does the work it is suited to. The verses ask nothing of the listener except to hear how complete that power is.

After a flood, a street fills with workers. One runs a pump, one swings a shovel, one hauls sandbags, one hoses down the mud. No one has the same tool, and the street clears because every tool is used. The Mothers are like that: one power, many hands, each fitted to its own task.
