Some demons, their chests torn by the tips of her tusks, struck down by blows of her snout, fell before the boar-formed Mother, and others were split open by her discus. Narasimhi moved across the battlefield devouring great demons whom she had ripped apart with her claws, the whole sky filled with her roaring. Demons crushed by the fierce laughter of Shivaduti dropped to the ground, and she then ate those who had fallen. So the troop of Mothers, enraged, ground down the great demons. Seeing this, the soldiers who were the gods' enemies were destroyed by one means after another.

Three of the Mothers act in this passage, and each uses what is her own. Varahi has the form of the boar, so she strikes with snout and tusk, and the Devi Mahatmya also gives her the discus. Narasimhi, the man-lion Mother, tears with claws and fills the quarters of the sky with her roar. Shivaduti, whose name means 'she who has Shiva as her messenger', does the most with the least: her loud, terrible laughter alone brings demons down. Medhas tells Suratha that the Mothers then devoured the fallen. Then he sums up. The Mothers were enraged, they crushed the great demons, and the gods' enemies perished in many different ways. Why does Medhas tell it? Suratha has lost a kingdom and Samadhi has lost his family. Both are asking what power stands behind the world, and why it seems to bind them. Medhas answers with the Goddess as that power. Here her power is shown as many hands and many forms, none of them cut off from her. The battle is told briefly, and the point is the breadth of her action, not the wounds. The commentators read the Mothers as her own powers made visible, not as separate beings. A listener is left with one picture: whatever the enemy tries, there is a form of the Mother that answers it.

Think of a big household on a feast day. One person kneads dough, another stirs the pot, another carries water, and all of it is one meal. The Mothers are like those hands. Each does her own task, yet the work is one, and it is the Goddess's.
