Meaning · English
Seeing the demons fleeing, tormented by the troop of Mothers, the great asura Raktabija came forward to fight, full of anger. Whenever a drop of blood fell from his body onto the ground, a great asura of his own size sprang up from the earth. Mace in hand, that great asura fought against Indra's power. Then Aindri struck Raktabija with her own thunderbolt.
Medhas is telling the king and the merchant about the moment the battle turns. The demon army is running. The Mothers, the Goddess's own powers, have been cutting them down, and nobody is left to stand against them. Raktabija walks into that rout, angry, to hold the field. Take his name first. Rakta is blood. Bija is seed. He is the Blood-Seed, and the name already holds his secret. The text says each drop that falls from his body to the ground raises an asura of the same measure, which is what the word pramana means here: the same size and the same strength as the one who bled. Wounding him plants more of him. Then the fighting. One of these new asuras takes up a mace and fights Indra's power. The word for the Mothers as a group is matrigana, a troop or host of Mothers. Each carries the power of a god, and the one named here is Aindri, the power of Indra. She answers by striking Raktabija with her vajra, the thunderbolt. Medhas draws no lesson in these lines. He tells what happened, and the telling sets a problem: the usual way of ending an enemy, by hurting him, makes this one multiply. For a king who lost his throne and a merchant thrown out by his family, the story is placing before them something that grows each time it is struck. The Goddess's answer comes later in the telling. What these lines ask of the listener is only to see the problem clearly first.
Pull up bindweed in a garden and every torn scrap of root left in the soil sends up a new plant. The gardener who tears hardest ends with the most weeds. Raktabija is that kind of enemy: the blow meant to end him is what spreads him.
