Meaning · English

Struck at once by the thunderbolt, he poured out much blood. From it rose warriors, of his own form and his own prowess. As many drops of blood as fell from his body, so many men were born, with his strength, his force, his daring. Those men, born of blood, fought there as well, against the Mothers, in a fearful clash of weapons falling on weapons. And again, when a thunderbolt split his head and wounded it, blood flowed, and from it men were born by the thousand.

Three words carry the passage. Raktabindu means a drop of blood: rakta is blood, bindu is a drop. Sambhava means birth, coming into being, from the root bhu, to become; so raktasambhava means born of blood. Vikrama means stride or daring, the courage that steps forward. The passage counts the drops. Medhas tells King Suratha that Raktabija is struck with a thunderbolt and bleeds heavily. Each fallen drop becomes a man, and each man has the same form, the same strength and the same daring as Raktabija himself. The number of drops decides the number of warriors. These new men do not stand aside. They fight the Mothers, the divine powers who came with the Goddess, and the field fills with falling weapons. Then a second blow splits his head. More blood flows, and men are born by the thousand. The cruel point is that the attack feeds the thing it attacks. Medhas is answering a question Suratha is carrying: why does a great enemy, once struck, not simply fall? Suratha has lost a kingdom and knows how some troubles grow under every effort to end them. The story shows a foe whose strength lives in the very wounds made against him, so that force alone cannot finish him. It asks the listener only to see this plainly and to wait for the answer the next verses give.

Think of a dandelion gone to seed. Swat at it in anger and the seeds scatter, and next spring there are twice as many. The blow meant to end the plant is what sows it. Raktabija is that plant: each strike spreads him wider.
