Meaning · English

The Mother of Vishnu's power struck him in the battle with her discus. The Mother of Indra struck the lord of the demons with her mace. From the blood that poured out of the discus wound, great demons rose by the thousand, each the same size as he, and the world was filled with them. Kaumari struck the great demon Raktabija with her spear. Varahi struck him with her sword. Maheshvari struck him with her trident. He too, the great demon, seized with rage against the Mothers, struck each of them in turn with his mace. From his body, struck again and again by spear, trident and the rest, a flood of blood fell to the earth. From that flood, demons sprang up by the hundred.

Medhas is telling the king what happened when the Mothers closed on Raktabija. The name means blood-seed: rakta is blood, bija is seed. It names his gift, that every drop he spills grows into another of him. The Mothers are the matrikas, the divine powers of the gods who came to fight beside the Goddess. Each carries her god's own weapon. The word shakti means power, and here it is also the name of Kaumari's spear. The clauses go in order. Vaishnavi strikes with the discus, and the blood from that cut fills the world with demons as large as he. Aindri's mace follows. Then Kaumari, Varahi and Maheshvari strike with spear, sword and trident. Raktabija answers by hitting each Mother with his mace. More blows bring more blood, and more blood brings more demons, now by the hundred. Medhas tells it this way to show why the usual method fails. Every Mother is mighty and every blow lands. Yet the strength of the attack feeds the enemy. The king has lost his kingdom and is asking why trouble keeps multiplying. Medhas answers that some foes grow from the very effort made against them. The reading does not linger on gore. It sets up the problem that the later verses will resolve. It asks the listener to notice that force alone has reached its limit here.

A dandelion gone to seed. Swat it hard and the seeds scatter over the whole lawn, so one plant becomes dozens. Raktabija is that seed head: each blow, however strong, only throws his seed further.
