By those demons born of the demon's blood, the whole world was filled, and the gods fell into the deepest fear. Seeing the gods downcast, Chandika spoke in haste. She said to Kali, Chamunda: "Open your mouth wide. Take into this mouth, swiftly, the drops of blood, and the great demons born of them, that fall from the blow of my weapon. Move through the battle, eating the great demons born from it. So this demon, his blood drained, will come to his end. And devoured by you, the fierce ones will not rise, and no others will be born."

Three names carry this passage. Chandika is the Goddess in her fierce form, from chanda, fierce or wrathful. Kali is the dark one, from kala, black, and also time that consumes everything. Chamunda is her name as the slayer of Chanda and Munda, the two demon captains defeated just before this. Here the Goddess calls her by all of these names. The verse opens with the problem. Every drop of Raktabija's blood that touched the ground became another demon like him, so the world was crowded with them, and the gods were afraid. Medhas tells Suratha that the Goddess saw their dismay and spoke quickly. Her answer is a change of method, not a harder blow. Striking Raktabija only spilled more blood, so she asks Kali to open her mouth wide and catch the drops before they reach the earth. Kali is also to eat the demons already born from the blood. With nothing left to fall and nothing left standing, the demon is drained, and he dies. The last line gives the reason: the demons she devours will not rise again, and no new ones will be born. This answers the question the story has been building: what do you do against something that multiplies every time you hit it? In Medhas's telling, the Goddess does not fight the multiplying harder. She cuts off what feeds it. The reading asks the listener to notice that she hands this task to her fiercest form, and that the gods, who could do nothing, are the ones she turns to first in their fear.

A tap is running over a full sink, and mopping the floor only keeps you busy. Someone finally shuts the water off at its source and the floor can dry. Kali catching the blood before it lands is that act: the Goddess stops the supply that makes more demons.
