Meaning · English

So saying, the Goddess struck him with her spear, and Kali caught Raktabija's blood in her mouth. Then he struck Chandika with his mace, but the blow gave her no pain, not even a little. From his wounded body much blood poured out, and wherever it flowed, Chamunda received it in her mouth. The great demons who rose in her mouth from the falling blood, Chamunda ate. And she drank his blood.

Raktabija's boon was that every drop of his blood, once it touched the ground, became another demon like him. Striking him only made more of him. Here the Goddess stops the spilling. Three names carry the scene. Shonita and rakta both mean blood. Gada is the mace, his weapon. Chamunda is Kali, the fierce form Chandika called on in 8.51 and told to open her mouth wide. Kali and Chamunda are one figure, named both ways in these lines. Taking the clauses in order: the Goddess pierces him with her spear, and Kali takes the blood in her mouth before it can fall. Raktabija answers with his mace. The text says the blow caused her no pain, not even a little, so his anger has no effect on her. His body keeps bleeding, and Chamunda follows the flow and catches it wherever it runs. Some demons still rise from drops that fall into her mouth, and she eats them. Then she drinks the blood itself. Why Medhas tells it this way: Suratha has lost a kingdom, and Medhas is showing him a power that cannot be worn down by blows. The more Raktabija is struck, the more he multiplies. The Goddess does not hit harder. She changes where the blood goes, and the source of the multiplying runs dry. The lines ask nothing of the listener. They show what Medhas teaches about the Mother: she meets a problem that grows when attacked by taking away what feeds it.

A tipped jug pours milk across a kitchen floor, and every splash spreads further. Someone holds a wide bowl under the stream and catches it before it lands. Raktabija's blood is the spill. Kali is the bowl that stops it from spreading.
