Meaning · English

The Goddess struck Raktabija with her spear, her discus, her arrows, her swords and her lances, and Chamunda drank his blood. Struck down by the weapons, he fell on the surface of the earth, dead. O king, the great demon Raktabija lay with no blood left in him. Then the gods, O king, reached a joy beyond compare. And the host of the Mothers, born to help them, danced, wild with the heady rush of blood.

Medhas tells King Suratha how the battle ends. Three words carry it. Nirakta is bloodless: nir, without, and rakta, blood. It is the word for the moment the contest is decided, because this demon's life was the blood itself. Harsha is joy, from a root for the body thrilling, the hair standing on end. Medhas calls the gods' joy atula, without a match, because their fear had been the deepest of all. Matri-gana is the host of the Mothers, the divine feminine powers who came to fight beside the Goddess, and who stand with the gods here. Mada is intoxication, a drunken surge. Now each clause. The Goddess strikes with many weapons, and Chamunda drinks what flows from him, so nothing falls to the ground to rise again. He drops to the earth, struck down and bloodless. The gods, who had been afraid, are glad beyond measure. The Mothers dance, lifted by the wildness of the victory. Why Medhas tells it: Suratha has lost a kingdom and wants to understand a power that does not run out. Raktabija seemed to be that kind of foe, and the story answers by showing that what multiplies him can be stopped at its source. The text asks nothing of the listener here. It only lets the ending be told plainly, and lets the reader notice that the joy comes from relief.

A pot boils over on a stove and the mess keeps spreading, however much you wipe. It stops only when someone lifts the pot off the flame and the heat goes. Raktabija's endless copies were the overflow, and the ending came only when what fed them was taken away.
