Meaning · English
Wonderful, revered one, is this account you have told me of the Goddess's deeds and greatness, centred on the slaying of Raktabija. Now I wish to hear more. When Raktabija had been struck down, what deed did Shumbha do, and Nishumbha, so fiercely wrathful?
Suratha, the king who lost his kingdom, speaks to the sage Medhas. He has just heard the story of Raktabija and answers first with thanks, then with a request. Two words carry the thanks. Vicitra means wonderful, and it comes from citra, a picture, with vi- for variety: a many-coloured thing. Suratha calls the account a many-coloured one. Mahatmya means greatness, from mahat, great, and atman, self. By it he means the Goddess's full stature, which the sage has shown through her deeds, and which one deed alone would not show. The request follows. Suratha says he wants to hear more, and he names exactly where: what Shumbha did, and Nishumbha, after Raktabija was struck down. The word atikopana means exceedingly wrathful. He calls Nishumbha that, so he already senses the loss has not ended the war. It has made the brothers angrier. The verse is placed here because a teller needs a listener who asks. The sage does not push the story on. The king's wish to go on gives Medhas his reason to continue with the last two enemies. It also shows Suratha changing. A man who came to the hermitage with his own loss now wants to hear about the Goddess's work.
A child at bedtime hears the middle of a long tale, says it was wonderful, and then asks for what happens to the ones still standing. The thanks and the asking arrive together, and the asking shows how much was taken in.
