Meaning · English

When Raktabija had fallen and the others had been slain in the battle, Shumbha and Nishumbha were seized by a rage beyond measure. Seeing their great army cut down, Nishumbha could not bear it. He ran at the Goddess with the main force of the asuras. In front of him, behind him and on both sides came the great asuras, furious, biting their lips, to kill the Goddess. Mighty Shumbha came too, surrounded by his own troops. In his anger he meant to kill Chandika, after the battle with the Mothers.

Medhas is telling Suratha what the two brothers did once their best fighter was gone. Three words carry the verse. Kopa is anger, a heat that rises when something is taken from you. Amarsha is the refusal to put up with a loss, from a sense of 'I will not bear this'. Mahasura means a great asura, the chief fighters among the Goddess's enemies. The Mothers, matri, are the powers who had been fighting beside her. Now the clauses in order. Raktabija is down and the other asuras lie dead, and the brothers' anger grows past any measure. Nishumbha watches his great army being cut to pieces, cannot stand it, and charges with the best of the asura host. His captains surround him on every side, front, back and flanks. Their bitten lips show a fury that is almost beyond speech. Shumbha, the greater brother, then arrives with his own troops. Both are set on killing Chandika, and the verse says Shumbha comes after the battle with the Mothers. It is taught here because Suratha asked what the brothers did after Raktabija fell. Medhas answers that they did not stop to think. Anger pushed them straight forward, and a leader driven that way takes his whole army with him. The text asks nothing of the listener here. It describes how rage gathers and why the next battle is the largest one yet.

A wasps' nest is knocked down from a branch. The wasps do not scatter. They pour out and surround whoever struck it, all at once and from every side. The brothers' army is that swarm, and the anger of its two leaders is what sends it out together.
