The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 8 · The Two Paths
Reached Through Single-Hearted Devotion
Bhagavad Gita 8.22
Meaning · English
That Supreme Person, Arjun, son of Pritha, is greater than all, and is won only through devotion that turns to no other. All beings dwell within him, and by him all this is pervaded.
Krishna uses three words that carry the weight. Purusha is a person, the Supreme Divine Personality, not a force or an idea. Bhakti, from a root meaning to share in or belong to, is devotion: a love that moves toward someone. Ananya means without another, so the devotion is undivided, with nothing else sharing its place at the centre. The plain sense is that the highest reality is a person, greater than everything, and he is reached by love that does not scatter. Krishna gives the reason in the second half. All beings stand within him, and he pervades all this. Nothing is outside him, so there is no other door and no distant place to travel to. The one sought is already around and within the seeker. What he asks of Arjuna is single-heartedness, not a rank or a rite. Shankara reads the person as Brahman, and the devotion as a steady knowing that culminates in it. Ramanuja takes the person as the personal Lord, and bhakti as the very means of reaching him. Madhva stresses the Lord's complete difference from and supremacy over all beings, reached by devotion.
Think of a fish asking a friend where the water is kept, and swimming off in search of it. The water is already in its gills and all around its body. The fish stands for the seeker, the water for the Person who holds all beings and fills all this, so the search is a turning toward what already surrounds, not a journey away.
1. Choose one ordinary time today, such as the first minute after waking or the walk to a bus stop. 2. For two minutes, bring to mind one name or form of God you already love, and speak to it plainly, as to someone present. 3. When your attention wanders to other things, notice where it went, and return without scolding yourself. 4. Before sleep, think of one moment in the day where you kept that presence in mind, however briefly.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. Every few minutes his mind splits: the phone, the clock, the worst outcomes, a call he should make. He is tired and scattered, and nothing he turns to holds. Krishna's teaching offers one step here. He can stop spreading himself across ten anxieties and bring his attention to one point, the Person in whom all beings, his father and the surgeons included, are held. He might say one name quietly, breathe, and let the mind rest there each time it runs off. He would still be afraid, but the fear would no longer pull him in every direction at once. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind divided among many worries is wearier than one resting on a single thing. The verse does not promise that the surgery will succeed, that grief will be spared, or that prayer replaces the doctors. It says where a person may stand while the waiting goes on.
