Two Roads at Death
Bhagavad Gita 8.23
Meaning · English
Arjun, best of the Bharatas, I shall now describe the times at which yogis depart this world and do not return, and the times at which they depart and come back again.
Krishna opens a new subject here. Two words carry it: anavritti, no return, and avritti, return. Both come from the root vrit, to turn. Avritti is a turning back, a coming round again. Anavritti is the turning that never happens. Kala means time, and Krishna uses it for the moment or the manner of departure. He tells Arjuna that a yogi, one who has practised union with the divine, can leave the world in a way that ends in return or a way that does not. He promises to describe both. This is only an announcement, and the details come in the next verses. The reason for it follows from the previous teaching. Krishna has just spoken of a supreme abode from which none come back, reached by single-minded devotion. Arjuna would naturally ask what happens to a yogi at death, and whether every yogi arrives there. So Krishna sets out both outcomes plainly. He asks Arjuna only to listen, and he addresses him as the best of the Bharatas, a warm and serious summons. Shankara and Ramanuja both take kala as the path or the presiding deities of the path, not a clock hour. Madhva likewise reads it as the route taken. Each gives a different account of who travels which route.
A traveller at a big railway junction stands before two platforms. One train goes out and loops back to the same station by evening. The other runs to the end of the line. Before pointing to either, the station master first announces that both exist. Krishna does the same here: he names two departures, a return and a non-return, before describing them.
1. Choose one ordinary departure today, such as leaving the house or closing a laptop at day's end. 2. Take one slow minute before it and notice how you are leaving: rushed, resentful, settled. 3. Do it again tomorrow at the same moment and notice whether the manner of leaving has changed.
A man sits beside his father's hospital bed late at night. The monitors hum. He wonders aloud what becomes of a person at the end, and whether the way a life is lived changes how it ends. Krishna's announcement answers a question like his: he does not say the matter is unknowable or unimportant. He says there is something to be told, and he will tell it plainly. Step by step, the man can hear that the question is allowed, that a teacher has taken it seriously, and that the answer will come in parts. He does not have to settle it tonight. He can sit, listen, and let the teaching unfold. Ordinary experience confirms that questions about death are easier to carry when someone speaks about them calmly. The verse does not remove grief or fear, and it does not say what the doctors can or cannot do. It does not tell the man what will happen to his father. It only promises that the Gita will speak of departure, and in the verses after this one it does.
