Smoke, Night, Return

Bhagavad Gita 8.25

Meaning · English

Smoke, night, the dark fortnight of the moon, the six months of the sun's southern course: going there, the yogi reaches the moon's light and comes back.

Krishna now names the second road, the counterpart to the one he has just described. He lists its marks: smoke, night, the waning moon, and the half of the year when the sun travels south. Two words carry the weight. Yogi means one who is joined, a person who has practised steadiness and discipline. Nivartate means turns back, comes round again. The light here is the moon's, which is borrowed light, not a source of its own. So the verse says that a yogi who departs along this road reaches a gentler, reflected brightness and then returns. Krishna gives this as the reason the road matters: Arjuna asked what happens at death, and the answer has two halves, one of no return and one of return. This half is not a punishment. It describes a good person who still comes back. Shankara reads the smoke, night and dark fortnight as deities who lead the departed along the road. Ramanuja reads them the same way, as guiding powers. Madhva also takes them as presiding beings, not simple calendar times. What the verse asks of the listener is attention: know that the road exists, and see that the next verses ask what to do about it.

Think of a lamp-lit room at dusk. The lamp gives a warm, soft light, and it is pleasant to sit in. But the lamp runs on oil someone else supplied, and when the oil is done you must go out and fetch more. The moon's light in the verse is like that: real and bright, yet borrowed, so the one who rests in it returns.

1. Tonight, step outside or to a window after dark and look at the moon, or at the sky if it is not visible. Stay one minute. 2. Notice that its light is borrowed from the sun. Let that be the whole thought. 3. Then ask yourself one plain question: which of my good habits run on borrowed energy, such as praise or a deadline, and which come from within? Write one line in answer. 4. Repeat once this week, on a different night.

A night-shift nurse walks out at dawn after twelve hours of caring for others. She is proud of the work, and yet she feels she is running on fumes: kind words, strong tea, the thanks of one family. The verse speaks to that tired moment. In the text's teaching, a good life can still end in a return, because borrowed light, however warm, does not stand on its own. She might take from it a quieter question: what in my work feeds me, and what only drains the oil I was given? She could then protect one small thing that feeds her, such as a meal sat down for, a walk, or an hour of sleep with the phone away. Ordinary experience confirms that worn-out people give less patiently than rested ones. The verse does not promise that she will feel rested, nor does it replace a doctor if her exhaustion is more than tiredness. It also does not say what happens after death in any way that can be checked; it says this as the Gita's own teaching, and it asks only that she look honestly at where her light comes from.
