Steady Whatever the Hour
Bhagavad Gita 8.27
Meaning · English
Arjun, son of Pritha, a yogi who knows these two paths is never bewildered. Therefore, Arjun, at all times be established in yog.
Krishna has just described two roads a soul may take at death, one that returns and one that does not. Now he says what knowing them does for a person. The yogi who knows them is never muhyati, bewildered. The word carries the sense of being clouded, stunned, unable to tell which way to turn. Yogi here means one joined to God, and yoga-yukta, the word Krishna uses for what Arjun should be, means yoked, fastened to that union. Sarveshu kaleshu means in all times, not only in quiet hours. The reason is plain. Nobody knows the hour of their own going, so the joining cannot be saved for later. A person who is already yoked does not need to scramble when the moment arrives, and does not mistake the paths for each other along the way. Krishna asks Arjun, who is about to fight, to carry this steadiness into the battle itself. Shankara reads the yogi's knowing as clear discernment between the path of return and the path of freedom. Ramanuja reads it as the devotee's settled loving union with the Lord, held continuously. Madhva stresses that the knowing must go along with steady devotion to Vishnu, which is what keeps it from being mere information.
A traveler who has walked the road to the station every morning knows it so well that a power cut, a crowd or a late train does not lose him. His feet find the way. Steady union with God, practiced at all hours, works like that road: it is already known when the dark comes.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and before starting, take one slow breath and remember God in whatever way is natural to you. 2. Do it again at two other points in the day, perhaps before a meal and before leaving a room. 3. At night, notice in one sentence which moment felt steadiest and which felt most scattered. Do not grade yourself, only notice.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while his father is wheeled into an emergency scan. His mind jumps between worst cases and phone calls he should make. The verse speaks to exactly this scramble. Krishna says the one already yoked is not bewildered, and that the yoking must be done at all times, not summoned in a crisis. Step by step, then: before the corridor, there were small habits of turning attention back to what he holds dear. In the corridor, he does not need to invent steadiness, only return to a habit his mind already knows. He breathes, sits, answers the nurse clearly, and calls the one person who needs calling. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who has practiced calm in small moments finds it nearer in large ones, and that panic is worst for those who have never rehearsed anything else. The limit is honest: the verse does not promise that the scan will be clear, that the father will recover, or that fear and grief will not come. It offers steadiness of mind, not a different outcome, and it is no replacement for the doctors doing their work.
