The King of Sciences
Bhagavad Gita 9.2
Meaning · English
This is the king of sciences and the deepest of secrets, pure and highest. It can be seen directly and realized directly. It is virtuous, easy to practice, and it never wears out.
Krishna tells Arjuna that what he is about to teach is rajavidya and rajaguhya. Raja means king, vidya means knowledge or science, and guhya means hidden, kept back. So it is the king among kinds of knowledge and the best kept of secrets. He adds that it is pavitra, pure, and uttama, the highest. Then comes what sets it apart. Pratyaksha means before the eye, so it can be perceived directly. Avagama means grasped fully, so it can be realized and not merely believed. It is dharmya, in keeping with dharma, the right way of living. It is easy to practice, and it is avyaya, not spent: nothing in it runs down with use. Krishna offers all this as the reason to listen. Arjuna is in distress, and an idea that is only argued over would not reach him. Krishna says this one can be tested in a person's own experience and asks no harsh austerity. Shankara reads it as knowledge of the Self, whose fruit is known within. Ramanuja reads it as devotion to the Lord. Madhva reads it as knowledge of God's supremacy, reached by his grace. What it asks of Arjuna is what 9.1 already asked: to listen without envy, and to check what he hears.
A hand pump in a village lane. Nobody needs a book to learn what water is. You work the handle, water comes, you drink, and tomorrow it is there again. The teaching claims the same: tested by the one who tries it, within anyone's reach, and not used up by being drawn on.
1. Tonight, write one line naming something that troubles you. 2. Under it, write what you would need to know to be free of it. 3. Over the next three days, as you read the verses that follow, mark any line you can check against your own day instead of simply accepting it. 4. Each evening, spend two minutes noting one line that held up and one that did not.
A woman on an early train is tired. Her aunt has urged her toward a spiritual path, and she has pictured long rituals, costly courses and a teacher she must trust blindly. She expects to be told to believe first and understand later. Krishna's claim runs the other way. He calls the teaching directly perceptible and easy to practice. So the first step is small: she can try one thing from it today and watch what happens in her own mind and day. Next she notices what held up and what did not. Nothing asks for payment, rank or special skill. She can also set aside what she cannot yet check, without pretending to accept it. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: what a person has tried for herself is known differently from what she has only heard described. The verse does not promise that her tiredness, her worries or her aunt's pressure will disappear, and it does not replace a doctor if her exhaustion has a bodily cause. It says the way is open to be tested, and that is all it says.
