Doubt and the Return
Bhagavad Gita 9.3
Meaning · English
People without faith in this dharma, Arjun, conqueror of enemies, do not attain me. They come back again onto the path of death in material existence.
Three words carry it. Shraddha is faith, from a root sense of setting the heart on something. It is trust given before the proof is complete, the way you trust a road you have not yet walked. Dharma is what holds a thing up; here it is the path Krishna has just described. Samsara is a going-round, and vartman is a road, so the phrase names a road of death that circles back on itself. Krishna tells Arjuna that people without this trust do not reach him. They turn back, and what they return to is that circling road. The reason sits in the verses before. He has called this knowledge directly perceptible and easy to practice, so the failure he names is not difficulty. It is refusing to walk far enough to find out. He asks Arjuna for an honest trial, not for blind belief. Shankara reads faith as trust in the scripture and the teacher, without which knowledge does not arise. Ramanuja reads dharma here as devotion to the Lord, so the faithless stay in samsara for lack of it. Madhva reads the faithless as those who deny the Lord's supremacy, and so do not reach him.
A hiker reaches the trailhead and does not trust the signpost. She walks ten minutes, doubts it, and goes back to the car park. The next weekend she does the same. The sign points to the summit. Faith is the willingness to walk past the first doubt, and the car park is the same circuit again.
1. Today, pick one small practice you have heard is good and have kept at arm's length, such as sitting quietly for five minutes after waking. 2. Do it at the same time for seven days, without grading it. 3. Each evening, write one line on what you noticed. 4. On the day you want to skip it, notice what excuse shows up, and do the five minutes anyway.
A man in his fifties, home from hospital after a heart scare, stands at the park gate on the third morning. His doctor told him to walk daily. His legs feel heavy, the walk seems pointless, and he turns toward home. Krishna names exactly this: turning back before arriving. What the verse would change is small. Trust here does not mean believing without evidence. It means going on long enough to find out. So the man walks to the second bench, no further, and notices that the doubt can walk beside him. Ordinary experience confirms that the habits dropped in the first week are the ones never really tested. The verse does not promise that a few mornings will reach what Krishna speaks of. It does not remove the man's fear, and it does not replace his doctor's advice or his follow-up visits.
