Bhagavad Gita 9.4

Meaning · English

This whole world is pervaded by me, in my unmanifest form. All beings rest in me, but I do not dwell in them.

Three words carry it. Avyakta means unmanifest, not shown, not an object the eye can find. Murti is form, so avyakta-murti is a form that cannot be seen. Tatam means stretched through, as thread runs through cloth. Krishna tells Arjuna that the whole jagat, the moving world, is pervaded by him in this unseen form. Every living being stands in him. Then comes the turn: he does not dwell in them. He is the support, and nothing in the world holds him up or limits him. Krishna gives the reason by pointing at what Arjuna can actually see, a crowded battlefield, and telling him what it all rests on. Arjuna is about to grieve over bodies and names, and he is shown a ground that is not made of them. The listener is asked to hold two things together: God is everywhere, and no creature confines him. Shankara reads the last clause as saying the Self is never touched by the changes of beings. Ramanuja reads it as God supporting all while remaining free of their faults. Madhva stresses that God is wholly distinct from the beings he sustains.

A table holds up every dish at a wedding feast, plates, pots and lamps, and it is under all of them. No dish holds up the table, and a spilled bowl does not break it. The world is the dishes. Krishna is the table, present beneath each, dependent on none.

1. Today, pick one ordinary object near you, a cup or a chair, and look at it for one minute. 2. Ask quietly what it rests on, the table, the floor, the ground beneath the building. Follow the chain downward. 3. Tonight, when something goes wrong or someone upsets you, remember that it rests on something steadier than itself. Notice whether your grip loosens even slightly.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. Every nurse's step makes his chest tighten. He is lost in what might happen, as though the whole world were this one corridor. The verse would change the moment in small steps. First he notices that the corridor, the building and the city all go on around him. Then he hears Krishna's claim that every being rests in a ground that no event can break. His breathing may slow, and his fear may stop filling every corner. Ordinary experience confirms that when we step back from a single worry, it shrinks in proportion. The teaching here is its own: it speaks of an unseen presence under everything that is also untouched by it. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take away the fear or the grief. It is no substitute for the surgeon's skill or for the family sitting beside him.
