Holding Without Dwelling
Bhagavad Gita 9.5
Meaning · English
And yet all living beings never abide in me. Behold my divine energy. I am the sustainer of all beings, yet I never dwell in them; my own self is the creator of all beings.
The previous verse says all beings rest in Krishna and that he does not stay in them. Here he says the same thing again, and tells Arjuna to look at it as yoga aishwaram, his divine power, not as a riddle. Two words carry it. Bhuta-bhrit means the one who bears or sustains beings. Bhuta-bhavana means the one who brings beings into being. Krishna claims both roles, and then says he is not bhuta-stha, not located inside them. He holds everything up without being caught in anything he holds. His own self, atma, stays free of the creatures it sustains. The reason he gives is Arjuna's confusion. Arjuna is about to fight people he loves, and he sees himself as tangled in their fates. Krishna shows a different kind of relation: total support with no entanglement, so that the one who sustains is not shaken when what is sustained changes. Shankara reads the opening as saying that beings rest in him only from the standpoint of ignorance, since the Self is untouched, like space. Ramanujacharya reads it as beings depending wholly on the Lord's will, while he is not bound by their flaws. Madhva reads it as the Lord's inconceivable power upholding all, while he remains entirely distinct from them. All three keep both halves: he sustains, and he is not stained.
A stage floor carries every actor, every prop and every heavy scene of the play. Kings fall and armies charge across it. The floor takes the weight of all of it and is never the king, never the battle, never wounded by the plot. Krishna describes himself in that way: the ground under every being, not a character within them.
1. Pick one thing you carry for others today: a household, a shift, a child's homework. 2. While doing it, notice once the difference between carrying the task and carrying everyone's mood about it. 3. When someone near you is upset, give the practical help they need, such as water, a ride or an hour, and leave their mood with them. 4. At night, spend two minutes recalling one moment when you held something up without being pulled into it.
An eldest sister has paid the bills and settled the quarrels in her family for years. After one more argument at the dinner table she sits alone in the kitchen, feeling that every mood in the house has landed on her. The verse changes the moment in steps. First it separates two things she had merged: the load she carries and the people she carries it for. Krishna, in the text's teaching, sustains all beings and is not located inside them, so support and entanglement are not the same act. Second, she can keep paying, cooking and listening, and still not take each person's anger as her own verdict. Third, what she gives becomes steadier, because it does not rise and fall with the room. Ordinary experience agrees that a person who absorbs every mood tires faster than one who simply helps. The verse does not promise that the quarrel ends, that her tiredness lifts, or that she needs no rest and no help from others. If exhaustion or low mood stays for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
