Borne Along by Nature

Bhagavad Gita 9.8

Meaning · English

Presiding over my own nature, I send forth again and again this whole multitude of beings, all of them helpless, carried along by the force of nature.

Three words carry the verse. Prakriti is nature, the material energy that makes up bodies, minds and the world. Visrijami means to send forth or release, as a potter sets a pot down or a hand lets go of a bird. Avasham means without one's own say, not in one's control. Krishna tells Arjuna that he stands over his own nature and releases the whole crowd of living beings from it, over and over. Those beings do not choose to arrive, and they are moved by nature's force, not by their own command. The reason comes from the verses around it. Krishna is explaining how a world of countless beings keeps appearing and returning without leaving him. Nature is his own, and he presides over it. The helplessness belongs to the beings. It does not belong to him. For Arjuna, frozen by what he is about to do, this loosens the grip of his own sense of sole authorship. He is one among many, carried by a force larger than his wishes. Shankara reads nature here as Krishna's own power, with beings turning under it through ignorance. Ramanuja reads nature as belonging to the Lord, as a body belongs to the one who lives in it. Madhva stresses that nature and beings depend on the Lord, who alone is independent.

Children climb onto a playground roundabout while a parent stands at the centre and pushes. It spins faster, and they shout that they cannot stop it. The children are the beings, the spinning is nature's force, and the parent at the centre is the one who presides over it.

1. Tonight, pick one moment from today when you acted before you had chosen to, such as snapping, reaching for your phone or eating when not hungry. 2. Write one line about what was pushing you: tiredness, hunger, a mood, a habit. 3. Say to yourself, quietly, "I was carried there." Notice whether that makes the memory feel lighter or heavier. 4. Tomorrow, watch for the same push once, and pause for three breaths before you act.

A young father is up at three in the morning with a baby who will not settle. He has slept four hours in two days. He hears himself speak sharply to his wife over something small, and he cannot say where it came from. The verse gives him another way to read the moment. Krishna tells Arjuna that beings are carried by nature's force and are not fully in control of themselves. For the father, that means the sharpness arrived with the exhaustion, the hunger and the noise, and it did not come from the whole of who he is. So he can name the push, which is tiredness, and say it aloud. He can apologise without a long speech. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint. The verse also does not make him blameless, since he still has to make it right with her. It does not remove the exhaustion, and if the sleeplessness drags on or his mood stays low, a doctor is the right person to see.
