Shumbha Rides Out
Devi Mahatmya 9.15

Meaning · English
When mighty Nishumbha had fallen to the ground, his brother Shumbha, burning with rage, set out to kill Ambika. Standing in his chariot, he held up his finest weapons in eight matchless arms, and with them he seemed to fill the whole sky.
Three words carry the verse. Bhratri means brother, and the whole verse turns on that bond. Samkruddha means thoroughly enraged, anger gathered to its full. Ambika is the Mother, the name the sage uses for the Goddess here. Medhas tells Suratha what happened next. Nishumbha, fierce in battle, has fallen to the earth. His elder brother Shumbha does not stop to grieve. Grief turns straight into fury, and the fury sends him out to kill Ambika herself. He stands in his chariot with eight arms, each raised with a weapon of the highest kind. The arms are matchless, and together they cover the sky. The picture is of a man made huge by rage. Why does Medhas dwell on it? Suratha has lost a kingdom and the merchant has lost his family. Both are held by attachment, and here is attachment in a ruler of the worlds. Shumbha's love for his brother is real, yet it has hardened into a wish to destroy. The text does not ask the listener to hate him. It shows what a bound mind does with loss: it grows louder and reaches for more weapons. The listener is asked only to watch this closely, and to notice how much of that grip they carry themselves.
A man whose brother has just been knocked down in a street fight pulls off his coat, spreads his arms wide and storms forward, looking twice his size. The size is all show. It is grief and anger puffed up into a body, like Shumbha's eight arms against the sky.
